Cumby Collegiate High School recognized a number of students for their academic achievements during an awards program held May 1 in the school gym. More than $240,000 in scholarships were awarded to CHS seniors, which includes associate degree candidates. Twenty-two industry- based certifications were also awarded to CHS students this year as well. The top 10 percent of the class was also recognized at the awards program.
Scholarships
At least $242,800 in scholarships were announced for graduating seniors at CCHS during the annual awards program, and counting; school officials reported there are still a few community scholarships that have yet to come in this year.
The largest singular award announced May 1 went to Caylor Hoops. The graduate candidate has been awarded an $80,000 Legacy Scholarship at Houston Baptist University.
Overall, Texas A&M University-Commerce awarded $78,000 in scholarship offers to Cumby Collegiate students. Madison Carson, Ashlyn Hudson, Erin Morgan, and Shelby Saragosa each was offered a $16,000 Presidential Scholarship from TAMUC. Tatum White, Heather Mc-Craw and Kate Massey each were each awarded a $4,000 Blue and Gold Tier 2 Scholarship to attend TAMUC. Ariana Young too was awarded a $2,000 Blue and Gold Tier 3 Scholarship from TAMUC.
Mariana Ugalde was named a Bright Star Scholar and will benefit from a $40,000 Bright Star Scholarship from the John and Deborah Gillis Foundation, to be paid over the course of four years.
Awarded a $12,000 Eagle Elite Scholarship at Texas A&M-Texarkana.
Neely Hammond received offers for a $6,000 Hydro Dependent Scholarship, an $8,000 Freshman Excellence Scholarship and a $4,800 Phi Theta Kappa scholarship to attend Midwestern State University.
Associates Candidates
Nancy Moore with Hopkins-Rains Retired School Personnel awarded Ashlyn Hudson with one of two $500 scholarships that will be given out this spring to local high school seniors.
Cumby Collegiate PTO awarded Jackson Evans and Erin Morgan.
Juliana Osornio presented Crisitan Vizcaya and Heather McCraw with Arsenio Ugalde Memorial Scholarships.
Associate degree candidates
More than half of the graduating class at CCHS is or has been enrolled in dual-credit courses. Overall, 14 Cumby students have completed all of the requirements in their program through the Paris Junior College program. Those students include Erin Morgan, Ashlyn Hudson, Jackson Evans, Neely Hammond, Alexis Ruiz, Kelcie Fite, Caylor Hoops, Mariana Ugalde, Clay Krotky, Heather Mc-Craw, Cristian Vizcaya, Madison Carson Armando Osornio and-Shelby Saragosa.
Notable is the fact that Erin Morgan finished her associate’s degree in kinesiology from PJC in August, almost a full year early, freeing her up to play volleyball and softball her senior year.
The CCHS associate degree candidates will graduate from PJC on May 12.
Finally, Stephen F. Austin has awarded $6,000 Academic Excellence Scholarships to Clay Krotky and Alexis Ruiz.
Top 10
The top 10 percent of this year’s Cumby Collegiate graduating class was honored during Monday evening’s awards program.
Shelby Saragosa is the top ranking student in the CCHS Senior Class of 2022-23 with a 4.3137 grade point average, making her the class valedictorian. Earning salutatorian honors with a 4.1928 GPA is Erin Morgan. Ashlyn Hudson is the third ranking student in this year’s graduating class with a 4.0523. Fourth ranked Madison Carson graduates with a 3.9846 GPA. Finally, finishing in fifth place with a 3.8672 GPA is Jackson Evans.
Industry Certificates
Twenty CCHS students earned 22 industry-based certifications this year.
Reydin Wyrick and Armando Osornio earned both structural steel and OSHA 30-hour certifications.
Other CCHS students receiving OSHA 30-hour certifications are Colt Talley, Clay Krotky, Danny Hickman, Misty Taylor, Andrew Dignam, Jon Johnson, Jackson Evans, Jailyn Dixon, Cristian Vizcaya, Caylor Hoops, Logan Butler and Dakota Ridings.
Earning paraprofessional certification this year are Ariana Young, Maryann Monse, Neely Hammond, Madison Carson, Shelby Saragosa and Areli Torres.
Valedictorian Shelby Saragosa will use her training to serve as a paraprofessional on the Cumby Early Childhood Campus, while she pursues a bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University- Commerce. She is taking advantage of Cumby Collegiate’s 13/14th year opportunity, which means she will be working for the district while earning a bachelor’s degree.
