Hopkins County Sheriff 's Deputy Kyle Shelton was on routine patrol in the area of FM 69 and FM 269 when he observed a Dodge pickup and a Chevy S-10 pickup stopped at the intersection, according to arrest reports.

The driver of the Dodge exited his vehicle and started a verbal disturbance with the other driver. Shelton made contact with the man, who identified himself as Tony Curtis. Curtis reporteldy told the sheriff 's deputy his girlfriend was following him in the second vehicle since he did not have trailer lights. The 45-year-old Sulphur Springs man claimed he had become angry because she was not keeping up with him.

HCSO Cpl. Justin Wilkerson made contact with the second driver, who corroborated Curtis’ story.

While speaking with Curtis, Dep. Wilkerson obtained probable cause to search the Dodge pickup after detecting the odor of burnt marijuana inside. Curtis granted consent for the search, and Dep. Wilkerson located drug paraphernalia, as well as a clear plastic baggie containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine, weighing 0.9 grams including packaging.

After further observation, Wilkerson noticed the Chevrolet pickup’s registration sticker was altered to read 02/24. The vehicle also had two different license plates, and the dash VIN label had been removed. Wilkerson ran the VIN from the door, and the vehicle came back as stolen out of Ector County.

Curtis took ownership of both the S-10 and the suspected methamphetamine, and advised he had purchased the S-10 from someone in Wood County. The S-10 pickup was approximately valued between $750-$2,500.

Curtis was arrested and booked into the Hopkins County jail on one count each of possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance and theft of property valued between $750 and $2,500.
