A vehicle pursuit spans two counties

A pair lead police on a vehicle pursuit from Sulphur Springs into Delta County just before 3 a.m. July 1, according to police reports.

Sulphur Springs Police Officer Thad Cook attempted to stop a Nissan Maxima at 2:23 a.m. Thursday on North Hillcrest Drive for a traffic violation. The black car continued onto the shoulder of the road, where a bag went out the passenger’s side window, Cook alleged in arrest reports. Instead of stopping for the flashing lights of the patrol vehicle, the sedan accelerated, continuing north on Hillcrest Drive.

The police officer continued following the car to Texas Highway 24 at County Road 4220 in Delta County, where “stop sticks” were successfully deployed, stopping the Maxima.

Both the driver, identified in arrest reports as 28-year-old Lenzie Dwaine Foley of Quitman, and passenger, 21-year-old Elizabeth Cadena of Sulphur Springs, were detained.

In the vehicle, Cook reported two small bags containing approximately 18 grams of suspected marijuana were found. Foley claimed he didn’t have any knowledge of drugs in the car, while Cadena refused to answer any questions at all.

A Hopkins County Sheriff ’s Office deputy about that time reported finding a bag of suspected marijuana in the area where the bag was reported to have landed after being thrown from the car window during the pursuit.

Both Foley and Cadena were charged with possession of marijuana since neither claimed the substance located in the vehicle. Both too were charged with tampering with evidence for the bag of contraband they were believed to have tossed out the window to discard it, to prevent being charged for having it, Cook alleged n arrest reports.

The male driver was also charged with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, according to arrest reports.

Man accused of assaulting an elderly person

Thirty-year-old Tony Contreras was arrested at 1:01 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, on Veterans Drive for injury to an elderly person, a third-degree felony offense.

Sulphur Springs Police Officers Edward Jaime and Cameron Robinson responded at 2:43 a.m. at the address to check out an assault report.

Upon arrival, the officers observed an elderly individual with apparent minor injuries to his head, arm and legs that were bleeding profusely. The 74-year-old allegedly sustained the injuries when he was pushed, punched and kicked by Contreras. Suspect Contreras, police noted in arrest reports, had only minor lacerations on his knuckles.

As a result, Tony Contreras was arrested on an injury to an elderly charge, punishable as a third-degree felony offense if convicted.

Also arrested on Veterans Drive at 1:14 a.m. Tuesday was 36-year-old Sheena Nicole Jaco on a public intoxication charge.

While at the location at 12:43 a.m. SSPSD Officer Robble Acosta noticed the Sulphur Springs woman was unsteady on her feet, had glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and smelled an alcohol odor emitting from her. She was unable to perform sobriety tests and was arrested for public intoxication.

Teen jailed for having marijuana, THC, stolen gun

SSPD Officer Thad Cook stopped Rogelio Cruz at 9:32 p.m. June 30 on Calvert Street for driving without head lights when requried.

Upon contact with the driver, Cook alleged he could see a bag of suspected marijuana in plain view. A probable cause search of the Lincoln Navigator revealed nine THC pens with 2 grams of THC per pen, a glass jar weighing about 121 grams, a firearm, and a larger plastic bag of suspected marijuana. Overall the suspected marijuana weighed 15 3/4 ounces, the firearm came back stolen during a records check using its ID number, the officre alleged in arrest reports.

As a result 17-year-old Cruz was arrested at 10:02 p.m. on Calvert Street for possession of 4 grams or more but less than 400 rams of a Penalty Group 2 controlled substance in a drugfree zone, possession of stolen firearms, possession of 4 ounces or more but less than 5 pounds of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon, Cook noted in arrest reports.

Youth accused of 911 abuse

Sulphur Springs Police Officer Steven Lail responded at 11:49 p.m. June 30 at Royal Inn, from which a 19-year-old Brownwood man was alleged to have called 911 without an emergency and had used the phone to make harassing statements to dispatchers on the 911 line.

When Lail attempted to place Ricardo Leonel Santana into custody, he pulled away, then tried to hide his hands to prevent police from placing them into handcuffs, Santana was arrested at 11:59 p.m. June 30, at Royal Inn on resisting arrest and making silent or abusive 911 calls.

SSPD: Woman digging in dumpster connected to meth

Police contacted Landy Michelle Brennan at 6:24 p.m. July 1 at a Jefferson Street address, where she was found digging in a dumpster, then walk behind storage units.

Due to recent thefts, SSPD Officer Dustin Green began investigating the situation. She and another woman, identified in arrest reports as 42-year-old Laura Ann Dyslin.

A search of a Nissan yielded two bags of suspected methamphetamine weighing about 1.3 grams. As a result both Brennan and Dyslin were both arrested for possession of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams a controlled substance charge.

Crash results in DWI arrest

Sulphur Springs Police Cpl. Silas Whaley contacted a 32-year-old Pickton woman a t 10:51 pm. Tuesday on College Street in reference to what was reported as a minor crash.

Upon contact, Whaley noted the woman to be unsteady on her feet, have glassy, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and an alcohol odor emitted from her breath.

After field sobriety tests, Jessica Lynn Winchester was arrested at 10:41 p.m. on a driving while intoxicated charge. She agreed to a blood test. A sample was taken at the hospital, then Winchester was jailed on the drunk driving charge, according to arrest reports.

Fort Worth man arrested on felony DWI charge

SSPD Cpl. Silas Whaley and Edward Jaime stopped Tommy Jerold Hutchings Jr. at 7:34 p.m. July 4 on West Industrial Drive for reckless driving.

Police noted the 51-year-old Fort Worth man displayed signs of intoxication, including having bloodshot glassy eyes, slurred speech and an alcohol odor on him. Hutchings was taken into custody for suspicion of drunk driving.

The Fort Worth man agreed to give a blood sample, which was taken at the hospital for analysis; he then was booked into jail on a driving while intoxicated charge.

A records check showed Hutchings had three or more previous DWI convictions, resulting in the charge being enhanced to a third-degree felony offense, Whaley alleged in arrest reports.

Man's driving results in police contact, DWI arrest

Officer Zachary Davis responded at 12:39 p.m. June 30 on College Street near the square, where a motorist was reported to have driven through the middle of the square.

When officers arrived, they reported finding a truck parked on the sidewalk facing College Street near the Veterans Memorial. Davis reported later seeing Mitchell Ray Boyd sitting on a ledge talking to a city employee.

Upon contact, Davis alleged he could immediately smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the 68-year-old Sulphur Springs man, who had slurred speech. When asked how much alcohol he’d consumed he replied, “too much,” and was unable to complete standard field sobriety tests, as he was unsteady on his feet and kept saying he’d fall over,the officer alleged in arrest reports He agreed to a blood draw. The sample was take at the hospital, then Boyd was transported to jail where he was booked in at 2:33 p.m. on a DWI charge.

CPS investigation results in two arrests

Police responded at an East Shannon Road hotel to assist Child Protective Services personnel with an investigation and, instead of just standing by the 29-year-old woman’s room where a 37-year-old Forney man was said to be potentially aggressive, officers ended up taking two into custody.

They noted the Sulphur Springs woman was acting very sporadic, unable to stand still so they obtained her permission to search the room she’d been living in for a month. When asked, Roberson admitted there was something illegal in a container, but denied having anything illegal on her personally, SSPD officers alleged in arrest repoerts.

A search by CPS, however, yielded a bag of suspected methamphetamine later retrieved from her bra. While the room was being searched, Roberson confirmed the contents of the bag was contraband. Additional drug paraphernalia was found in the room. Roberson claimed the substance and was arrested at 11:52 a.m. Thursday with possession of less than 1 Bram of a Penalty Group 1/1-B controlled substance.

The man was found hiding in the bathroom of the woman for which he’d been issued a protective order prohibiting him from being around her; he arrested for violation of a protective order, accoring to arrest reports.
