Monday

„ Christian Initiation Sessions are held Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 297 Texas St. All are invited to “come and increase your knowledge about God and the Catholic Church.” For more information, call Mary Besze at 903-5885652.

Wednesday

„ CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital sets yearly goals to benefit the citizens of Sulphur Springs andHopkins County. One of its goals is to improve food insecurity. To satisfy that goal, CHRISTUS is a community partner, giving monetary support to Dinner Bell five times a year. Aug. 9 will be CHRISTUS’ fourth appearance at the feeding ministry. Associates of the hospital further their commitment by preparing the food boxes and distributing them to the cars driving under the covered driveway on Church Street on the northeast corner of the First United Methodist Church campus starting around 10:30 on Wednesday. The Aug. 9 menu includes chicken pasta casserole, oven roasted carrots, garden salad, buttered French bread slices and Chocolate Chip Cake. Dinner Bell coordinator Judy Gilreath reminds community members to be careful as the pandemic and flu are still in our midst! She encourages people to wear masks where required, wash their hands often and to get inoculated and boosted!

„ First Baptist Church-Sulphur Springs will have no midweek activities during the month of July. Regular midweek activities will resume in August. The midweek meal will be offered again beginning Aug. 23.

Friday

„ Cumby Food Pantry will be open 8 to 11 a.m. every Friday at 8285 Interstate 30 service road southwest in Cumby for families in Cumby, Hopkins County and surrounding areas who are in need. Those on Pan Program can now pick up one box per month on Friday. Donations are welcome. For information, call 903-994-2689, and for food emergencies, call 903-513-4612.

„ Mitchell Chapel C.O.G.I.C. will host lunch from 10:30 a.m. until it’s all gone for a $10 donation. Dine in or carryout available. Menus vary by the week. Deliveries can be made for orders of two or more lunches to the same location. The church is at 402 South Jackson St. in Sulphur Springs. For more information, call 903-885-0338.

„ Christian Recovery Group meets Fridays at 7 p.m. at New Beginnings Fellowship Baptist Church, 155 North Jackson St. in Sulphur Springs, for those with addictions, broken emotions or broken relationships. For information, call the church office at 903-885-0624 during regular business hours, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Monday-Friday.

Special Events

„ The Rev. Dan Hoke, first-Sunday pastor at Old Saltillo Methodist Church, invites the public to a very special presentation at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6. “A Gospel Shoutin’ Time” will be presented by the esteemed Dr. Shelly O’Neal of Navarro College, who has portrayed prolific gospel lyricist Fanny Crosby over 150 times at venues across the state. The late gospel hymnist who, though blind, produced more than 5,000 poems and songs in her nine-decade lifetime including “Blessed Assurance,” “Near the Cross” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus.” Her works will be brought to robust life by Dr. Neal at the historic Old Saltillo United Methodist Church, 664 County Road 3357, in southeastern Hopkins County.

„ First Baptist Church has a number of items planned next month that the community is invited to participate in. They include:

• Bingo and a bake-off will be held in the FBC Fellowship Hall Wednesday, Aug. 9. at 6 p.m.

• Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.: All are invited to join the congregation in the Fellowship Hall to pray for students, teachers, and administration as they begin a new school year at local school districts.
