Main Street Theatre will premiere “Melodies of Broadway” this Friday starting at 7 p.m. You can leave the Galilean binoculars at home because you get to experience the epic voices of multiple local artists in the intimate setting of the old opera house downtown at 227 Main Street.

Directed by Lloyd E. Turney, the performance will be an event of a lifetime with emotionally- charged songs from the following — Sharon Baker, Jen Brown, Ashley Jackson Day, Amy Hale, Sydnee Hawkins, Keeli James, Grace Mansfield, Darla Meek, Emily Ragsdale and Kylie Shoemake, accompanied by the talented Laura Maxwell of Commerce on piano.

Hosting the event, Enola Gay and Brad Cummins will guide audiences through an evening of musical pieces that will be “centered on feelings and emotions,” according to Phillip “Pip” Bickford. There will be a few different performances each weekend, showcasing eight singers each night — Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The event will be held Sept. 9-11 and Sept. 16-18.

“It will appeal to a wider audience than a single show might have,” said Bickford, hoping to offer many talents at once who are often overlooked otherwise. “It’s going to be a classy night of raw talent,” he added. The show was the creation of Bickford based on a show he produced in May in Greenville called “Broadway in Concert.”

The event was held for the community to showcase local talent for the Hunt County Festival of the Arts, hosted in partnership by Greenville Theatre Works and Greeville Family Theatre (GFT). Those who are involved in theatre often spend time enriching others’ talents and rarely get a chance to shine, but this event will provide that opportunity for both all artists, including Jen Brown and Amy Hale of Greenville. Jen Brown, director of the Mary Poppins event held this summer for GFT, will be in attendance for the show, but this time she will be one of the acts appearing on the Main Street Theatre’s stage. The creative director for GFT, Amy Hale will also be performing for Melodies of Broadway.

“The performers are very supportive of one another,” said Bickford, “it’s nice to see those kinds of bonds coming together on stage here.” Bickford would like to see individuals who may not attend a musical broadway show typically, also find a place in his audience, “theatre is accessible to everyone, to more than our very dedicated theatrical crowd.”

Tickets for Melodies of Broadway are currently being sold online for $15, but tickets will also be sold at the door for $20. Bring your family in support of this incredible experience this Friday, it is sure to leave those who attend speechless. For tickets, visit ‘communityplayersinc. com’ or check them out on Facebook.
