The following reports are based on arrests conducted with reports filed by Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County law enforcement from 5:30 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Tuesday and included:

Alcohol-related arrests

■ A Sulphur Springs Police officer was approached by someone who allegedly reported that “he just came from Love’s Travel Stop and observed a white male that seemed to be highly intoxicated stumble into the woods located next to the travel stop.” The officer further reported that the person said the man had an “alcoholic beverage in his hand and could barely walk.”

The officer alleged he walked to the tree line south of Love’s and saw the man laying on his back and “holding a large beer in his hand,” about 5 yards into the trees. According to the report, the officer attempted to speak to the man, who “finally opened his eyes which were blood shot and glassy.” After being asked how many of the large beers he’d had, the man allegedly stated that he’d had “two to three before the one he had in his hand.”

The 41-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested for alleged public intoxication around 10:30 Sunday morning.

■ Responding to a call for an unconscious person at Pilot Travel Center on Interstate 30 and Hillcrest Drive in Sulphur Springs late Sunday night, a Sulphur Springs Police officer alleged in a report that the 36-year-old man took a swing at EMS personnel, as being aggressive, belligerent and uncooperative. Multiple indicators of intoxication prompted the officer to arrest the man on charges of public intoxication and assault on a peace officer and was taken to jail.

The man is reported to have continued combativeness and aggression, this time toward other inmates at Hopkins County Jail. The officer also stated in his report that the man was cuffed and taken to a violence cell, where he allegedly “lay prone on the floor.” Upon removing the cuffs, the report read, the man is said to have stood up, kicked the officer in the leg “and began to take an aggressive posture.” The arresting officer reported he “struck” the man and “restrained him on the ground.” The man again stood up, the officer alleged, and again “took an aggressive posture” toward the officer.

The officer reported he then took out his Taser, at which point the man allegedly became compliant and was removed from the cell without further incident.

Drug-related arrests

■ A Hopkins County Sheriff ’s deputy alleged he saw a “small clear baggie in the driver side floorboard,” of a 2004 Chrysler Concord he pulled over on State Highway 19 Sunday evening for an alleged defective break light. The 61-year-old Sulphur Springs man

The 61-year-old Sulphur Springs man who was driving was asked to get out of the car, according to the report. The officer alleged the man “hesitated and kept his right hand clenched” and was escorted to the front of the patrol unit. According to the report, the officer alleged further that the man was not following his commands, and so tased him.

In the man’s hand, the officer reported, was “a small, clear baggie containing a crystal-like substance.” The substance field tested positive for methamphetamine, weighing 0.84 grams, according to the report.

The man was arrested on the charge of possession of a controlled substance.

■ A 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche was pulled over for alleged speeding, 80 miles per hour in a 75-mph zone on Interstate 30 at mile marker 127 around 9:30 p.m. Monday by a Department of Public Safety officer. The officer claimed in his report that while attempting to speak with the driver, the other people in the vehicle talked over their conversation, so he reported he asked the driver to step out to “speak to him without interruption.”

Upon the man’s exit of the vehicle, the officer wrote in his report he “observed a clear baggie containing a crystal substance lying in his seat. I secured the baggie as evidence and detained” the man. The man allegedly admitted the substance was methamphetamine.

He was arrested on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, less than a gram, and was issued a warning for speeding.

Miscellaneous arrests

■ A 60-year-old San Diego, Calif. man was arrested late Friday on a San Diego County warrant for injury to a spouse following a traffic stop for alleged speeding on Interstate 30 eastbound. In the course of a driver’s license check, the man was also reported to have an active protective order. The Sulphur Springs Police officer allegedly discovered that one of the passengers in the man’s Ford SUV was one of the protected persons on the order, and the man was additionally arrested for violation of that order.

■ Sulphur Springs police arrested a 50-year-old Sulphur Springs man for assault causing bodily injury to a family member just after 11 p.m. Friday. The arresting officer reported the man’s wife was “wearing a shirt that appeared to be torn and to have redness on her back.” The woman allegedly told the officer that she is his wife and “that he had assaulted her.”

■ A 42-year-old Mesquite man was allegedly investigated Saturday evening following a reported accusation that he stole a vehicle. The arresting Sulphur Springs Police officer stated in the report that a probable cause determination was made that the man did allegedly commit the offense, and he was arrested for unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

■ Sulphur Springs police officers responded to a complaint of alleged suspicious activity in the parking lot of Scrubbies on Gilmer Street in Sulphur Springs just before 1 p.m. Monday. “Dispatch advised a white, heavy-set male in a white Chevrolet pickup was touching himself,” the arresting officer reported. When the officers arrived, the described man allegedly drove out of the parking lot and refused officers’ attempts to stop him. The report states the 34-year-old Farmersville man fled at high rates of speed and disregarded stop signs and lights until his tires were spiked on Interstate 30 at exit 112 in Cumby, stopping on the service road where he was taken into custody. The man was arrested on the charge of evading arrest with a vehicle.

Transfers, warrants and releases

■ A License Plate Reader alert of a wanted person on a blue 2004 Ford F-150 with an expired registration prompted a Hopkins County Sheriff ’s deputy to pull the truck over near the Valero station on Interstate 30 eastbound in Sulphur Springs. The deputy alleged in his report he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the truck.

A probably cause search reportedly turned up “a small amount of drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle,” and a check of the driver’s and the one passenger’s driver’s licenses allegedly showed active warrants on both.

Both were cited for possession of drug paraphernalia. The driver, a 26-year-old Sulphur Springs man, was arrested on Tarrant County warrants for unlawful carrying of a weapon and burglary of a vehicle. The passenger, a 22-year-old Sulphur Springs woman, was arrested on a Hurst Police Department warrant for theft of greater than or equal to $750 and less than $2,500 and three Dallas County warrants for violation of parole of fraudulent use or possession of identifying information, possession of a controlled substance of more than 1 gram but less than 4 grams and more than 2 but less than 4 grams.

■ A 23-year-old Sulphur Springs woman was arrested around 4 p.m. Friday following a traffic stop on a Sulphur Springs warrant for unreasonable noise. Bond was set at $468.

■ A Sulphur Springs Police officer responded to a call for service around 9 p.m. Saturday, which resulted in the arrest of a 27-year-old Sulphur Springs woman who was allegedly discovered to have an active Tarrant County warrant for nonpayment of child support.

Animal complaints

Editor’s Note: Call reports dated Saturday, Aug. 29 were not available by press time Tuesday. Hopkins County law enforcement cited the computer program that generates these logs was down.

• A cow was reported on FM 275 south in Cumby at 9:25 a.m. Friday. A second call about a black cow at the same location was made at 5:23 p.m. Officers were unable to locate it.

• A black cow was reported on FM 1567 west at County Road 1165 in Sulphur Springs at 10:42 a.m. Friday.

• A Como woman called at 5:05 p.m. Friday to speak to an officer about two cats she found on her property.

• Sulphur Springs man called at 11:31 p.m. Friday to get permission to use an injured deer he found on CR 2391 in Pickton.

• Cows were reported on FM 275 north in Cumby at 8:28 a.m. Sunday.

• Cows were reported at 11:03 a.m. Sunday on State Highway 69 north at FM 1537 in Sulphur Springs.

• On FM 71 west in Sulphur Springs, 50 cows were reported at 11:11 a.m. Sunday on property where they didn’t belong.

• A Brashear man called at 12:05 p.m. Sunday to report he had penned up on his property a red Angus bull he found in the road at FM 2653 south.

• Dogs were reported running across Interstate 30 eastbound at mile marker 109 in Cumby at 12:11 p.m. Sunday. Dogs were again reported in Sulphur Springs at mile marker 139 at 7:11 p.m. It is unknown if they were the same dogs. Officers were unable to locate either pack.

• Cows were reported on CR 2413 in Sulphur Springs at 9:54 p.m. Sunday.

• Seven or eight horses were reported at 3:25 a.m. Monday on CR 3554 in Sulphur Bluff. Another call at 3:51 a.m. reported horses a mile west of SH 69 at 71 east and CR 3554.

• Large, deceased hogs were reported to be on FM 2560 near CR 1100 in Brasher at 6:47 a.m. Monday.

• One black cow was reported on FM 71 west, east of North Hopkins school in Birthright at 10:28 p.m. Monday. A second call at 5:24 a.m. Tuesday reported a black cow about a mile past Joe Bob’s on FM 71.
