Sulphur Springs Police Department activity from Friday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 26 included:

Friday, Feb. 23

„ Jordan Terrell Givens, a wanted man, reportedly entered the lobby at an East Industrial Drive business at 1:48 p.m. Sulphur Springs Police Officer Francisco Castro and Lt. Mark Estes found the 20-year-old Sulphur Springs man there and took him into custody on warrants on a crim inal trespass charge and for violation of probation on an obstruction or retaliation charge.

„ Sulphur Springs Police Officers J. Jackson and Cpl. Dustin Green noted the driver of a GMC Terrain stopped at 9:04 p.m. on WA Street had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech when talking to officers during the stop. A strong alcohol odor emitted from the 34-year-old Sulphur Springs man’s breath and he admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages, police alleged in arrest reports. He exhibited multiple clues of intoxication on sobriety tests and took him into custody; a cold beer can was found under the passenger’s seat; Aaron Taylor Johnson was jailed on a driving while intoxicated-second offense charge, according to arrest reports.

Saturday, Feb. 24

„ Police responded to an assault reported at 4:02 a.m. on South Moore Street. Joanna Vanessa Mejia was alleged to have assaulted her aunt by punching the 33-year-old woman in the nose. The older woman was reported to have visible injury to the nose. The 18-year-old was arrested by Sulphur Springs Police Officers Thad Cook and Robble Acosta on a Class A misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury to a family member, according to arrest reports.

„ Sulphur Springs Police Officer Francisco Castro responded at 3:46 p.m. at Walmart, where a woman was alleged to have paid for one item but not others, which she then attempted to leave the store without paying for. Asset protection staff reportedly detained Sheila Janice Levick, who is alleged to have more than $250 in items she did not pay for in her possession. The 44-year-old Sulphur Springs woman was arrested on a Class B misdemeanor theft of property charge.

Sunday, Feb. 25

„ Sulphur Springs Police responded at 11:34 a.m. on Main Street to a complaint of a vehicle colliding with three other vehicles on the property. A 49-year-old Dallas woman was reportedly seen exiting the vehicle said to have caused the damage. She claimed the vehicles at the trailer park already had damages. She was nervous when telling police she was trying to drive to a convenience store. Based on her behavior, officers asked but were denied consent to search the Toyota Camry. Upon request, SSPD Officer Cleve Williams responded and had his canine partner sniff around the car for contraband. The SSPD K-9 alerted on the car. Officers located a firearm in a backpack on the passenger’s side of the car. A records check showed Desiree Lewis to be a convicted felon, prohibited from having a firearm. She claimed ownership of all items in the car, but denied knowledge of the gun. Lewis was arrested at 12:27 p.m. on a third-degree felony unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon charge.

Monday, Feb. 26

„ A records check conducted during a Lee Street traffic stop showed William Chance Walker to have outstanding warrants. The 27-year-old Yantis man was arrested by Sulphur Springs Police Department Cpl. Dustin Green on the Fannin county violation of probation-theft of property and failure to identify charge.

„ Taken into custody in the 8th Judicial District Court by jail officers were: 42-year-old Joshua Scott Morris on a warrant for violation of probation-possession of 4 grams or more but less than 20 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance; and Amy Nicole Fitzgerald of Sulphur Springs on a warrant for violation of probation-manufacure or delivery of 1 gram or more but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance.

„ Taken into custody by a deputy at Hopkins County Courthouse on a Class A misdemeanor evading arrest or detention charge was 33-year-old Everett Van Jennings of Sulphur Springs.

„ Sheriff's Cpl Richard Branely took Librado Santibanez- Velasquez into custody at 7:30 a.m. on a Smith County assault of a family or household member impeding brerating or ciruclation warrant. The 41-yearold Tyler man was stopped for a traffic violation. A records check showed the man to have the warrant for the assault alleged to have occurred on Jan. 18, 2023.

„ Deputies arrested Juan Ramon Gutierrez at 11:48 p.m. on 6th Street in Cumby on two abandoning or endangering a child charges. He allegedly came home drunk, used a stove to set things on fire while his wife and children slep. He too is accused of causing damages, including knocking the refrigerator over while destroying the kitchen during the disturance.
