Hopkins County law enforcement activty from 5:30 a.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday included the following:

Friday, Feb. 9

„ Theft of almost $400 worth of merchandise was reported Feb. 9 at a South Broadway Street business.

„ Acting on information gleaned from a tip, Sulphur Springs Police Detective Jason Reneau obtained a search warrant for a Whitworth Street address. The warrant was executed at the address. Rebecca L. Maiello was the only person in the residence at that time. A records check showed the 25-year-old Sulphur Springs woman had an outstanding warrant. A short time later she was taken into custody at 12:54 p.m. on the possession of drug paraphernalia warrant. Child pornography was located. Reneau secured a warrant for John Ernest Lancaster’s arrest. He took the 66-year-old Sulphur Springs man into custody at 3:14 p.m. and escorted him into the county jail on a possession of child pornography charge.

„ Mason Barrett Tillema, 26, of Winnsboro was arrested during a traffic stop on State Highway 11 east at County Road 3019 at 6:57 p.m. after he failed to signal the required distance before turning. As Deputy Kyle Shelton approached the vehicle, he observed an empty firearm holster in Tillema’s front waistband and asked the man to exit the vehicle for safety. As Tillema exited, Deputy Shelton observed a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine sticking out of Tillema’s right side pocket. A canine officer was called to the location at 6:50 p.m. but gave a negative alert. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, Shelton located a Taurus 9mm pistol in the driver’s side door. Shelton also learned Tillema was on probation for felony burglary of a vehicle. Tillema was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a firearm by a felon and a Hopkins County warrant for possession or delivery of drug paraphernalia.

„ Deputies responded to two motorist assist requests, one on State Highway 19 north at County Road 4795 at 9:30 p.m. and one on eastbound Interstate 30 east of FM 900 north at 10:03 p.m.

„ Sulphur Springs Police Officer Robble Acosta and Sgt. Matt Glenn reported stopping a Buick Verano at 10:50 p.m. on Hillcrest Drive at Wildcat Way because of a defective tail light. A search of the vehicle yielded two backpacks, one containing drug paraphernalia and the other containing a baggy with suspected methamphetamine in it. The substance field tested positive for meth, resulting in both Justin Carl Kroening and Jeremy Allen Akers being arrested at 11:32 p.m. on a second-degree felony possession of 4 grams or more but less than 200 grams of a Penalty Group 1/1-B controlled substance. The substance in packaging weighed 4.05 grams.

Saturday, Feb. 10

„ Suspicious activity was reported on County Road 4592 at 5:07 p.m.

„ Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident on County Road 4769 at 8:01 p.m.

„ Suspicious activity was reported on State Highway 11 west at 11:35 p.m. Deputies were unable to locate.

„ Police reported seeing a Chrysler van pass another vehicle in a no passing zone on Church Street. Officers sped up and tried to stop it. The van accelerated, and continued doing so at a high rate of speed as it traveled north. As the van approached a curve, the driver slowed down. The arresting officer clocked the van on his radar as traveling 65 in a 40 mile per hour speed zone. A traffic stop was initiated. The driver, 41-year-old Alfredo “Toto” or “Cowboy” Peralez of Winfield was arrested for reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor offense. A 55-year-old passenger, Jose Carmen Garcia of Winfield, was noted to be sitting in the rear of the vehicle in between two captain chairs, not on a seat, although one was available, and thus was also not wearing a seat belt at the time of the stop.Garcia was arrested on a Class C no seat belt charge, according to arrest reports.

„ Damon Dashune Heath, 28,ofCommercewas arrested in Commerce, transported to the Hopkins-Hunt County line and taken into custody by Hopkins County deputies at 8:01 p.m. on a bond forfeiture warrant for possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1/1-B controlled substance. Bond was set at $10,000.

Sunday, Feb. 11

„ Lucio Chavez, 76, of Winnsboro was arrested after deputies received a report of a suspicious vehicle on FM 269 south at CR 2420 in Pickton was received at 1:05 a.m. When they arrived on scene, deputies found a white Ford Ranger parked in the roadway travel lane facing north, with the Chavez unconscious in the front seat. Deputies woke him, and he stated he had been drinking with friends. Arrest reports note that Chavez was clearly intoxicated, stumbling out of the vehicle and had glassy eyes. They placed Chavez in custody and conducted an inventory of the vehicle. Three small baggies, two containing methamphetamine and one containing cocaine, were located in the center console. Chavez was charged with public intoxication and two counts of possession of more than 1 gram but less than 4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance.

„ Taylor Monique Harrison, 26, of Sulphur Springs was arrested at the Easy Street Apartments at 2:31 a.m. Officers were dispatched to the location in reference to a burglary. The complainant advised Harrison was breaking glass and trying to come inside an apartment. Upon arrival, officers observed Harrison run from the complex and get into a silver Ford Fusion.Officers conducted an investigative stop on the vehicle, driven by Harrison, who had blood on her hands. Officers observed two windows were broken. The complainant was able to identify Harrison on scene, and Harrison advised she hit the windows. Harrison was arrested on one count of criminal mischief resulting in damages valued at $100 or more but less than $750. Harrison’s vehicle was impounded and towed.

„ Police contacted Fantasia Lashay Thomas at 2:36 a.m. during a call for service at Easy Street Apartments. A records check using her identifying information revealed a warrant for her arrest. The 25-year-old Sulphur Springs woman was jailed on the outstanding speeding in a school zone charge.

„ Police also responded to what was reported as a disturbance in progress on Carter Street. Officers contacted several individuals upon arrival. They claimed the disturbance was verbal only. A records check showed Angel Dawn Walkingstick to be wanted. The 32-year-old Sulphur Springs woman was taken into custody at 2:48 p.m. on the outstanding theft of property charge.

„ Sulphur Springs police investigated an assault of a 44-year-old woman by a 42-year-old male family or household member was reported on League Street.

„ Sulphur Springs Police Officers responded to a Church Street disturbance at 3:43 p.m. Upon arrival, they spoke with a male and female. During investigation into the incident, all people present advised there’d been an understanding. Police detected a strong marijuana odor emitting from them individuals. They admitted they do smoke marijuana and had done so recently A search of Jordan River “Smokeyy” Swindell’s backpack revealed multiple straws containing suspected controlled substance residue, additional residue in a bag, a glass pipe with suspected methamphetamine residue and multiple small baggies containing suspected meth residue. The 19-yearold Sulphur Springs man claimed ownership of all located contraband and was taken into custody at 4:20 p.m. on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge, SSPD Officers Francisco Castro and Zach Davis alleged in arrest reports.

„ Deputies responded to a noise complaint on County Road 2437 at 5:46 p.m.

„ A 40-year-old Pickton man turned himself in at the Hopkins County Sheriff ’s Office on Texas Parks and Wildlife warrants for untagged deer, waste of game, hunting without a license and no required archery hunting endorsement.

Monday, Feb. 12

„ Police stopped Rayvon Deon Thompson at 2:10 a.m. Monday for a traffic violation.. A records check showed the man to have two outstanding Sulphur Springs warrants for driving while license invalid charges. The 46-yearold Naples man was taken into custody and to jail on the warrants.

„ Police responded to a theft report at Walmart. Upon arrival, officers were told Chad Nathan Wetzel passed all points of sale without paying for more than $150 worth of merchandise. He was detained by store asset protection staff. Video footage was reviewed. The 40-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested at 8:34 p.m. on a Class B misdemeanor theft charge, according to arrest reports.
