A 28-year-old Sulphur Springs man reportedly attempted to evade police Thursday afternoon, resulting in his arrest.

The deputy was in the area of Fisher and Lee street Thursday afternoon, attempting to locate a subject wanted on outstanding warrants. He reportedly noticed a dark Hyundai sedan stopped at the intersection, then leave the area quickly. The driver of the vehicle reportedly matched the description of the wanted subject, so the deputy pursued.

The vehicle reportedly turned onto South Davis Street and took off at a high rate of speed, then turned west onto Industrial Drive, continuing to drive in an erratic manner at a high rate of speed. The deputy continued to pursue with lights and siren as the vehicle was fleeing at speeds over 100 miles per hour. The vehicle continued west on the Interstate 30 service road.

The deputy reportedly noticed the suspect vehicle began to smoke badly and appeared as if the motor had been damaged from the manner in which it was being driven. As the vehicle approached FM 2653, it began to slow for a right hand turn and stopped. The driver was ordered to exit the vehicle and lay facedown on the roadway. He complied and was detained.

The driver was identified as Robert Wayne Preas. A records check confirmed Preas had two active, confirmed warrants. He was arrested, and the vehicle was released to the registered owner, who was a passenger in the car.

In addition to the two warrants, Preas was also charged with one count of evading arrest or detention with a vehicle without incident. Bond was set at $20,000 on the evading charge and $25,000 on the warrant for assault causing bodily injury. He remained in jail as of press time Friday.
