A 911 call received at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday reporting a reckless driver who allegedly showed the reporting party a pistol led to the arrest of two Sulphur Springs men less than an hour later.

SSPD officers responded after learning the reporting party followed the suspect vehicle from the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and West Houston Street to a location near Century Lake on County Road 4703.

A Hopkins County deputy who was speaking with the reporting party at the lake allegedly heard gunshots fired over the phone.

SSPD officers arrived on scene at 6:45 p.m. and conducted a felony takedown on the suspect vehicle, a maroon Cadillac DTS, as the suspects attempted to leave. They reportedly moved away from the vehicle toward the lake when they observed law enforcement officers on scene.

Laredo Dell Wayne Brandenburg and Marc O’Neil Hutchings, both 25 and of Sulphur Springs, were detained. Two handguns, claimed by passenger Hutchings, were located in the common area of the vehicle, along with a usable amount of marijuana less than 2 ounces.

Brandenburg, the driver of the vehicle, reportedly advised he had been shooting one of the two handguns found in the vehicle at snakes near the water.

A records check revealed that Hutchings had an active warrant for failure to appear, while Brandenburg had active warrants for failing to maintain financial responsibility and expired registration.

Both men were additionally charged with possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Bond was set at $3,000 each, and both men were released from jail Thursday.
