Sleep Medicine
Tired of feeling drowsy? A sleep study may help you rest easier. More than 40 million Americans suffer from long-term sleep disorders, and more than 20 million experience occasional disturbances
. Sleep disorders are conditions that interfere with the normal sleep patterns of an individual, but also affect their partners’ and family member’s rest.
Sleep is as important to your physical health as eating and breathing. Sleep disorders can disturb a person’s rest at any age, and they can range in severity from mildly irritating to potentially life threatening. When left untreated, they are linked to behavioral and mental issues, increased risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and kidney disease and stroke.
A diagnosis of a sleep disorder involves a clinic evaluation by a physician and an overnight stay in a private home-like sleep room where brainwave activity and sleep habits are monitored. Using advanced computerized technology, patients are linked to computers which continuously record a multitude of neurological functions as the patient sleeps. A physician’s order is typically required to participate in a sleep study.
