Lady Trojans lose against Celeste, 20-9

Bearden launches home run

CUMBY — The Cumby Lady Trojans dropped their third straight game Monday following a 20-9 loss to the Celeste Lady Blue Devils. Though they got off to a strong start, they weren’t able to sustain it, as the Lady Trojans’ struggles continued.

The Lady Blue Devils stepped up to the plate first, where they faced Bella Faulknor in the circle. The game started with a single. After a fly out, an error would lead to a pair of runs, giving Celeste a 2-0 lead. Their turn ended after a fly out and ground out.

The bottom of the first inning began with Ella Horne hitting a single. The bases would then load up after Faulknor and Kadee Pettit both walked.

On the next at-bat, Kinslee Dowdle reached base on an error, and Horne scored, trimming the score to 2-1. This was followed by Julia Hernandez hitting a fly ball for an out. In the same sequence, Faulknor was tagged out advancing to home plate.

The Lady Trojans would take the lead when Jenna Bearden hit a three-run home run, bringing Pettit and Dowdle home and giving Cumby a 4-0 lead. The first inning ended when Lilly Campbell struck out.

The second inning started with the Lady Blue Devils loading up the bases on a pair of walks and a batter being hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout, an error would lead to a pair of runs, as Celeste tied the score at 4-4.

The next at-bat resulted in a ground out, but the Lady Blue Devils also scored another run, pulling ahead 5-4. An RBI single followed, as Celeste extended their lead to 6-4.

An error occurred on the following at-bat, leading to another run, bringing the Lady Blue Devils’ lead to 7-4. Following a single, a pop out ended Celeste’s turn.

The bottom of the second inning started with Jenna Elmore hitting a pop fly ball for an out, and Jacie Morales striking out. Though a runner was gained after Horne hit a double, the inning ended when Faulknor hit a pop fly ball for an out.

The third inning began with a single. An error occurred next, which brought home a run, as the Lady Blue Devils increased their lead to 8-4.

Following a walk, an RBI single brought the score the score to 9-4. An out also occurred when the runner was tagged out at second base. Another out follows on a ground out.

The next at-bat resulted in an RBI double, as Celeste brought the score to a 10-4. After a single, an RBI single allowed the Lady Blue Devils to increase their lead to 11-4.

Their turn finally ended on a ground out.

The bottom of the third inning started with Pettit hitting a single. Two outs followed after Dowdle hit a fly ball for an out and Hernandez struck out.

On the next at-bat, Bearden hit an RBI single, bringing Pettit home and trimming the score to 11-5. After Campbell hit a single, the inning ended after Elmore hit a fly ball for an out.

The fourth inning started with a ground out. The Lady Blue Devils then gained a pair of runners on a walk and a single.

The next at-bat resulted in a ground out, but a run was also scored, bringing the score to 12-5. Another out occurred when the runner was tagged out at second base. A ground out immediately after ended Celeste’s turn.

The bottom of the fourth inning began with Morales reaching base on an error. Two outs immediately followed when Horne hit a fly ball for an out and Faulknor grounded out.

The next at-bat saw Pettit hit an RBI double, bringing Morales home and cutting the score to 12-6. This was followed by Dowdle swatting an RBI triple, bringing Pettit home and trimming the score to 12-7.

On the next at-bat Hernandez brought Dowdle home with an RBI triple, reducing the deficit to 12-8. The inning would end after Bearden hit a pop fly ball for an out.

The fifth inning kicked off with a walk. This was followed by an RBI double, as the Lady Blue Devils extended their lead to 13-8. An error on the next at-bat resulted in another run, as the score increased to 14-8.

The bases would then load up on a single and a walk. Three consecutive outs followed on a fly out, a pick off, and pop out.

The bottom of the fifth inning started with Campbell striking out. After Elmore hit a single, the inning came to an end after both Morales and Horne grounded out.

The sixth inning began with a strikeout. Following a single, an RBI single brought home a run, as Celeste increased their lead to 15-8. Soon after, a runner reaching base on a dropped third strike led to another run, bringing the score to 16-8.

After a strikeout, an error resulted in another run, bringing the Lady Blue Devils’ lead to 17-8. Following a double, an RBI single brought the score to 18-8. A pop out on the next at-bat ended Celeste’s turn.

The bottom of the sixth inning started with Faulknor and Pettit hitting singles. After Dowdle hit a fly ball for an out, the bases loaded up after Hernandez walked.

Faulknor then scored on a wild pitch, trimming the score to 18-9. Two more outs followed when Bearden and Campbell both struck out, ending the inning.

The seventh inning started with a walk. After a fly out, an RBI single brought the score to 199. This was followed by a ground out.

The next at-bat results in an RBI single, bringing the score to 20-9. A strikeout on the following at-bat ended Celeste’s turn.

The Lady Trojans were retired in order during the bottom of the seventh inning, as Elmore grounded out, Summer Smith struck out, and Horne hit a fly ball for an out, as Celeste capped off a 20-9 victory.

As a team, the Lady Trojans batted 12 for 34 (.353) from the plate. Pettit led the way, going a perfect 3/3. Bearden and Horne added two hits each, while Campbell, Dowdle, Elmore, Faulknor, and Hernandez all tallied one hit each.

Pettit was also the leading scorer with three runs. Dowdle scored two runs, while Bearden, Faulknor, Horne, and Morales all added one run each.

Faulknor suffered the loss in the circle. Across seven innings, she conceded 20 runs (six runs), 15 hits, and eight walks, managing five strikeouts.

With the loss, the Lady Trojans dropped to 0-2 in district and 1-11-2 overall. They resumed action Tuesday, traveling to Wolfe City to take on the Wolfe City Lady Wolves.
