Cumby seniors earn over $380,000 in scholarships

CUMBY — More than $380,000 in scholarships were awarded at the recent Cumby Collegiate High School Academic Banquet.

Mattie Willingham, Admissions Counselor at East Texas A&M University, presented three scholarships. Sandra McCraw received the Blue and Gold Tier 2 Scholarship, worth $1,500 per year. Chloe Groves and Gaby Osornio each received the Presidential Scholarship, valued at $5,000 per year.

Chris Burns, Director of the Banking Program, then presented a $15,000 baking scholarship to Groves.

Dakari Johnson received a $500 scholarship from the Texas Retired Teachers Association.

Chris Aguilar of St. James Catholic Church in Sulphur Springs presented Osornio with a $1,000 Knights of Columbus Scholarship.

Ella Horne was awarded the City National Bank Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

Kinslee Dowdle and Horne each received the Arsenio Ugalde Memorial Scholarship, worth $1,000.

Jenna Bearden and Groves received the Cumby Collegiate ISD PTO Scholarship in the amount of $500.

Dowdle, Brynn Emeyabbi, McCraw and Chayton Vaughan received the Cumby Collegiate ISD Athletic Booster Club Scholarship, valued at $1,000.

McCraw then received the Cumby Telephone Scholarship, worth $2,000.

Sergeant First Class Dustin Faulkner presented Ethan Ybarra with the Army Award of Excellence.

To round out the scholarships, students were asked to stand and be recognized for scholarships that had already been awarded. These scholarships included: Emeyabbi, Texas Workforce Scholarship, valued at $96,000; Tartleton State Leadership Scholarship, worth $1,500; Johnson, Austin College Football Scholarship, valued at $44,000; Osornio, Northeast Texas Livestock AssociationScholarship worth $2,250, and the Dodd City Tournament Scholarship for $250; Mary Murphy, John C. Stephen Merit Scholarship, worth $86,650; Vaughan, Southern Nazarene University Football Scholarship, valued at $76,000; Horne, Texas Tech Presidential Scholarship, worth $12,000, and Texas Tech Alumni Scholarship, valued at $4,400; Groves, East Texas A&M University Honors College Scholarship, worth $16,000; and Kadee Pettit, Stephen F. Austin State University Academic Excellence Scholarship, worth $20,000, and the Trail Blazers Powerlifting Scholarship, with the amount to be determined in the fall.

Additionally, Gaby Osornio and Chloe Groves were recognized as the Cumby Collegiate High School Senior Class of 2026 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.
