The Sulphur Springs Animal Shelter is at capacity and looking for homes for six puppies. Animal control officer Barbi Blanch says they are all friendly, happy, healthy and looking for good homes.

Shortbread, Somoa and Dosidos are 3-month-old shepherd/heeler mixes that came in together and have been at the shelter for around nine weeks. These little sweethearts are young enough to get along with everything and would be great with kids. They just want to play and be loved.

Come meet this adorable trio at the Sulphur Springs Atwood’s Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will be so excited to meet everyone who wants to come out and see them. They are all healthy, spayed and micro-chipped, with two rounds of vaccinations.

Keller is a 3-month-old mixed breed special needs puppy who is smart and sweet. She is deaf and will need someone who will help her learn hand signals so she knows what her people want from her.

Veterinary services for a new puppy generally cost between $150 and $200. The $100 adoption fee to the shelter includes:

  • Heartworm blood test;
  • First round of vaccinations for rabies and parvo/ distemper (DHLP) (Note: Puppies may require additional boosters, which are not included.)
  • One wormer treatment for roundworms and hookworms; and
  • Spay or neuter services, which must be completed within 30 days.

“When you adopt a new pet, you have to take it one step at a time,” Blanch said. “Go slow on the introductions. Even introducing two puppies to each other is going to take time. Whether it’s a puppy or an adult dog, it’s going to need patience and time to adjust.”

This applies to introducing a new pet to one that’s already in the home, housebreaking and obedience training, she said.

The shelter is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and is at 1313 Hillcrest Drive in Sulphur Springs. Their phone number is 903-438-9369.
