It seems that more and more people are receiving a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes these days. Although doctors and researchers have not yet determined an exact cause for the diseases, they can identify many factors that contribute to the onset. Obesity and lack of physical activity are two key components to this onset. Upon receiving the news that they are pre-diabetic or diabetic, people should lean into knowledge they can trust to help them manage their condition.

According to research- based curriculum from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, “Once you have Type 2 diabetes, it never goes away! It is a chronic disease. You can make it better, however.”

If you or someone you love has received a pre-diabetic or Type 2 diabetic diagnosis, we have a program from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension for you. In May, I will offer a 5-week series to help participants better understand diabetes and how to better manage their diet and exercise.

The series will begin on Thursday, May 2, at the Extension office on Houston Street.

Participants will have a choice of attending the morning session from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or an evening session from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 2, May 9, May 14, May 21 and May 28.

The series will focus on understanding the importance of daily self-monitoring, regular appointments with your doctor, understanding how to read nutrition labels, and implementing good diet exercise habits to help maintain healthy blood glucose levels. Participants can also become a great support system for one another.

The cost of the program is a one-time fee of $25 and participants will receive a notebook with class handouts and information. To register for the program, please call the extension office at 903-885-3443 or email County Extension Agent, Lisa Sprague at lisa. sprague@ag.tamu.edu.
