Statewide unemployment rises

Body

A newly released report from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) shows that the most highly employed sector of Hopkins County is trade, transportation and utilities.

During the fourth quarter of 2019, which runs from October 1 through December 31, TWC data shows that trade, transportation and utilities was the top employment sector in Hopkins County with approximately 3,555 individuals employed in this category.

Following behind were the categories of manufacturing, with 1,877 employed Hopkins County citizens and education and health services with 1,354 employed citizens.

The fields which employed the least citizens were federal employment with 72 workers, information technology with 118 citizens and state employment with 157 workers.

Overall, approximately 13,106 Hopkins County residents can be classified as employed by the TWC. This means they gather benefits from their employer. Additional citizens may be employed in other areas such as self-employment, agriculture, domestic employment or direct sales, but the TWC cannot track these forms of employment. Those who draw benefits from their employers account for less than half of Hopkins County’s population.

The average weekly wage for a Hopkins County resident was $809, according to TWC. Nearby, Hunt County averages $985, while Delta averages $556, Wood averages $801 and Titus averages $743.

In unemployment, according to the TWC, Texas saw an increase in the state unemployment rate during April 2020. Over the past month, the Texas economy lost approximately 1.3 million non-farm positions. Texas' unemployment rate is now 12.8%, which is below the national average of 14.7%.
