Lopez leads with 17 points

SULPHUR BLUFF- The Yantis Owls junior high basketball team traveled to Sulphur Bluff Monday for an early-season matchup.

The boys A team got off to a very strong start, allowing Sulphur Bluff to score just one point in the opening quarter. The Owls put up 15 points in the opening frame, and continued their momentum, taking a 28-5 lead at halftime.

The second half saw much of the same, taking a 40-11 lead into the fourth quarter. The Owls offense slowed down a bit in the final frame, but they still won the game handily, by a final score of 52-15.

Alex Lopez was the leading scorer for the Owls, outscoring Sulphur Bluff by himself, finishing with a total of 17 points. Eight of his 17 points came in the third quarter. Behind him were Brayden Green and Anthony Lopez who had 13 points each. Lopez shot the ball well from range, making three 3-pointers in the contest.

Evan Dunklin had a strong showing as well, finishing the game with eight points. Other scorers for the Owls were Ashton Rodriguez, Ryan Terrell, Alex Vasquez, and Oscar Martinez who all had two points each.

The Yantis B team had a strong showing as well, getting off to a quick 8-2 lead in the first quarter. The Owls never looked back, winning the game by a final score of 25-6.

Christian Lopez led the way for the B team, scoring 10 points, six of which came in the second half. Wade Batchelor was behind him, finishing with five points in the game. Other notable scorers were Alberto Gonzales and Sawyer Friddle, who each had four points.
