Sulphur Springs football head coach Greg Owens met with the media Wednesday for his weekly press conference. Owens discussed last week’s game, as well as looked ahead at this weeks opponent, No. 9 ranked Ennis.

Ennis is off to yet another very strong start this season, as they’ve opened the season with a 4-0 record. Last week the No. 9 ranked Lions shutout Greenville on the road, winning their district opener by a score of 28-0.

“They’re very talented. Overall they may be the best team in our district,” Owens said. “Ennis is still Ennis, they’re undefeated and things are rolling.”

One of the strengths for Ennis is their offensive line, which features a lot of strength and physicality. Owens was asked what his team would have to do to be able to approach them.

“Just be physical, we’ve got to beat them to the punch,” Owens said. “It’s just a great opportunity and a great challenge. We’ve got to be more physical than they are at the point of attack.”

Owens also said his team needs to just focus on each individual play.

“This is a one-snap game. Play this snap and then we’ll worry about the next one.”

Despite being a very talented team, and ranked inside the top-10, Ennis is not a very high scoring team. In their last two games they’ve scored an average of 25 points per game. Owens was asked how they might could use that to their advantage.

“Just outscore them,” Owens joked. “The thing with those guys are they are playing with a lot of confidence, they understand who they are. They know they’re consistent and steady.”

The two teams face off Friday evening in Ennis. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Coverage of the game will be published in Wednesday’s edition of the News-Telegram.
