Wildcats pick up blowout win on the road Saturday

MARSHALL- The Sulphur Springs Wildcats traveled to Marshall Saturday looking to keep their strong play going. The Wildcats entered the day as winners in seven of their last nine games.

The Wildcats first started to gain some separation early in the first quarter when senior Lamdorick Johnson was able to get a steal and a layup to put the Wildcats ahead 10-6. Early in the second quarter, senior Boo Wilkerson provided a spark when he got a steal and an assist to Johnson. On the following play Wilkerson knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 23-19 lead.

With just 52.9 seconds left in the half Johnson went the length of the floor for a layup, and the Wildcats took a 32-19 lead into the half.

Wilkerson’s strong shooting continued into the second half, knocking down another 3-pointer early in the third quarter to put the Wildcats ahead 37- 26. The Wildcats’ success with the deep ball continued as Parker Whisenhunt drained a 3-pointer on an assist from Caleb Alexander. Later in the frame Alexander knocked down long 3-pointer of his own to put the Wildcats ahead 52-35. Sulphur Springs was able to take their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter, winning the game by a final score of 68-48.

Johnson was the leading scorer for the Wildcats, finishing with 17 points as well as a handful of assists. Sulphur Springs had three other players finish in double-digits, including Justin Haire with 12 points, Kodrick Turner with 11 points and Alexander who also had 11 points.

Other scorers for the Wildcats were Wilkerson with nine points, Whisenhunt with five points and Jatavion Hall who had three points.

The Wildcats had a great night on offense, shooting an impressive 49% from the field, while also shooting 39% on 3-point attempts. Sulphur Springs’ defense was perhaps even more impressive, holding Marshall to just 36% shooting on the night, and 13% from behind the 3-point line. The Wildcats were also able to pull in more rebounds and rack up more assists and steals than Marshall.

Sulphur Springs jumps back into action Friday for a road match against Hallsville, before returning home Saturday to host Longview at 4 p.m.
