PITTSBURG- The Sulphur Springs Wildcats traveled to Pittsburg Monday for an early season matchup.

Joel Vasquez got things started for the Wildcats, scoring on an assist form Omar Hernandez. Hernandez followed that with a pair of goals of his own, one unassisted and one with an assist from Edgar Salazar. Sulphur Springs allowed a pair of late goals, but were able to hang on to the 3-2 win.

“We exploded for some goals, yet gave up some cheap stuff at the end of the game,” Coach Alexi Upton said. “I’m just glad we held on and won.”

There were a pair of junior varsity games before the varsity game, with the junior varsity B team opening things up with a 4-1 win. Charles Shaidx scored the first goal on an assist from Eduardo Estrada. Estrada followed up with a pair of goals of his own. Picking up the assists on the two Estrada goals were Rogelio Cruz and Eric Osornio. Cruz went on to score an unassisted goal of his own for some cushion.

The junior varsity A team had a strong game as well, finishing in a 1-1 tie, thanks to a goal from Kevin Garcia. Daniel Rodriguez picked up the only assist of the game.

Upton was proud of the way his junior varsity squad’s played, saying, “JV2 [B-team] had a really great game, picking up their first win and JV1 [A-team] played a hard fought 1-1 tie.”

Sulphur Springs will have their alumni game Saturday at 7:15 p.m. before hitting the road for most of their preseason schedule. The Wildcats return home one final time in preseason action, when they host Pleasant Grove Thursday, Jan. 26. That game is set to begin at 7:15 p.m.
