Wildcats pick up big district win at home

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hosted Texas High Tuesday night in a game they won, 57-48. This win completes the series sweep for the Wildcats, as they beat Texas High 64-55 on Jan. 24.

Sulphur Springs set the tone immediately, scoring on an alley-oop pass to Sadaidriene Hall on the opening possession. After Cameron Kahn scored in the paint to make it 4-2, Grayson McClure hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 7-2, sparking a big run for Sulphur Springs.

The Wildcats went on an 11-5 run to make the lead 18-7 with just 2:12 remaining in the first quarter.

Texas High made a push of their own in the final minutes of the quarter and entered the second quarter with the Wildcats leading 21-13.

The Wildcats’ offense went into a slump to start the second quarter, allowing Texas High to pull within 4 in the opening minutes. With 5:14 remaining in the first half, Sulphur Springs went on an 11-8 run then headed into the locker room, leading 32-25.

The second half opened with Hall finding Boo Wilkerson open for a 3-pointer, but Texas High would follow it with a 6-0 run. Justin Haire knocked down a free throw with 2:59 remaining in the quarter to make the score 38-36.

Sulphur Springs finished out the quarter with a Wilkerson layup and a pair of free throws from Hall to lead 42-38 headed into the fourth quarter.

Two minutes into the final frame McClure sparked the Wildcats’ offense, knocking down his second 3-pointer of the night. With 3:12 left to play, Texas High was forced to take a timeout after back-to-back layups from Hall and Wilkerson pushed the Sulphur Springs lead to 53-41.

The Wildcats took care of the ball in the final minutes and won the game 57-48.

Cameron Kahn was the leading scorer for the Wildcats, finishing with 14 points. Boo Wilkerson was right behind him with 11 points, 7 of which came in the second half. Sadaidriene Hall ended with 10 points after having just 2 points in the first half. Other scorers for Sulphur Springs were Justin Haire with 9; Grayson McClure, 6; Lamodrick Johnson, 4; and Justin Brock, 3.

The Wildcats will play again at home on Friday Feb. 14 against Royse City. The freshmen team will start at 5 p.m. with the JV and varsity to follow.
