Wildcats outscored 20-0 late by Tigers in defeat

CORSICANA — The homecoming crowd at Tiger Stadium went home happy as Corsicana exploded for 20-second half points as they rolled to a 41-14 win over Sulphur Springs, Friday, Oct. 18.

The Wildcats were outscored 20-0 in the final half as the Tigers displayed why they are near the top of the District 8-5A standings with a powerful offense and stingy defense.

Corsicana went to 6-2 overall, 5-1 in district. The Wildcats fell to 1-6 and 1-4.

A bright spot for the Wildcats was the tough running and catching by junior back Caden Davis. Davis accounted for more than 100 yards on the game. He had 16 rushes for 66 yards and two scores and also snagged five passes for 42 yards. Wildcat running backs averaged 3.3 yards per carry.

Junior quarterback Kaden Wallace completed 23-of-36 for 176 yards on the night. Weston Fields caught six passes for 38 yards; Zach Tiemeyer recorded three receptions for 49 yards; and Chase Haney caught three for 10 yards.

The Sulphur Springs defense had four tackles for negative yardage against the Tigers. Linebacker Eleazar Brena topped the tackle chart with 10 total tackles, one behind the line.

Other defensive performances include:

• Koderrian Turner, nine tackles;

• Cameron Kaudert, nine tackles, one for a loss;

• Kylan Wade, eight tackles, one for a loss;

• Ryan Carillo, seven tackles;

• D’Andre Peoples, six tackles;

• Derrick Clayton, six tackles;

• Aiden Walker, five tackles; and

• Chase Haney, five tackles, interception.

The Tigers broke open a close game at the half with 20 points and more than 220 yards of offense in the final two quarters. The Wildcats were held to less than 100 yards after intermission.

Corsicana had 441 total yards compared to 314 for the Wildcats. Quarterback Solomon James and running back Anthony Young each totaled more than 100 yards. The Tigers jumped ahead 14-0 in the first quarter. Corsicana drove for the first score with 6:31 left in the opening frame. Ethan Rodriquez booted both extra points with the first period belonging to the home team.

Lane Fuentes scored on a 12-yard fly sweep for the first Tigers touchdown.

Sulphur Springs had their most impressive drive of the night as they moved from their 27 down to score on the Tigers in the second period. Wallace completed passes to Haney and Tiemeyer. The touchdown came from 10 yards out by Davis following blocks up the middle. The Brandon Zavala extra point made it a 14-7 game with 11:32 to play before the half.

Corsicana had a short field to cover after the Wildcats didn’t convert an onside kick try. The Tigers started the possession on the 44 of Sulphur Springs.

The Tigers went to the airway for the score as James threw 17-yards to a wide open George Foster. The point after by Rodriguez padded the advantage to 21-7 with 8:55 remaining in the second frame.

Davis capped the next drive for Sulphur Springs with a short scoring run up the middle of the field. The Zavala kick cut the Tiger lead to 21-14 where it would remain as the first half concluded.

A turnover by the Wildcats early in the third period gave the Tigers the ball and a load of momentum. Sulphur Springs was deflated by the miscue on the punt return.

Corsicana got a touchdown pass from James to Fuentes from 44-yards out.

The extra point kick was missed. But the Tigers were gaining control of the game up by a 27-14 lead with 7:28 left in the third.

Damarius Daniels, a thunderous rusher all night for the Tigers, showed off his speed scoring on a 55-yard run with 5:49 left to make it a 34-14 advantage.

With the game on ice, the Tigers stopped the Wildcats on down and took over with 4:46 to go in the contest.

James scored on a 7-yard dash around end with 47 seconds left for the Tigers. The Wildcats lost nay the 41-14 and left town with another tough district defeat.

Sulphur Springs now must win the remaining games on their schedule to have a chance at a playoff berth.

The Wildcats host rival Greenville on Friday, Oct. 25 at Gerald Prim Stadium. The Lions are 4-3 overall, 3-2 in district. Greenville fell in a close battle, 17-14 against Royse City on Oct. 18.

Other district games this week include Corsicana at Forney; Kaufman at Royse City; North Forney at Terrell; Ennis has a bye week.

The Sulphur Springs eighth graders host Marshall for two 5 p.m. today, at Gerald Prim Stadium.
