TEXARKANA — Sulphur Springs came up short 10-5 to Jacksonville in the bi-district tennis playoffs.

The match, moved to Texas High's covered facility due to rain, was still a bright spot according to Tony Martinez, Wildcats head tennis coach.

"We made improvement. We're getting better. Earlier in the year we lost to Jacksonville by a one-sided score. We were in this match, we did not give it away," Martinez said.

"We finished third in district, and I am happy with that. We were closer in second matches," the coach added.

Due to being able to only use three covered coats, the match took more than seven hours to complete.

Sulphur Springs took a 6-3, 4-6 (10-7 tiebreaker) win over Jacksonville in boys singles.

In other singles scores for Sulphur Springs: Aaron Lucas lost, 6-4, 5-7 (3-10 tiebreaker); Logan Schumacher was defeated 6-3, 6-4; and Waylon Matlock fell by close scores.

The boys doubles team of Jordan Gonzaes and Carlos Lopez won 5-3 and 6-2.

Losing matches for Sulphur Springs were: Lucas/Schumacher, 6-2 and 7-5; and Matlock/Ramiro Ramirez, 6-3 and 6-2.

Jeauleight Cantu of Sulphur Springs scored the only girls singles win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Savannah Lilley lost 6-1 and 6-1; Harleigh Stegient fell by a 6-4 score; Paige Miesse was defeated 3-6, 6-4 and lost the tiebreaker 10-3.

The doubles duo of Miesse/Trynity Luckett won, 6-3 and 6-4. The pair of Meador/Lilley lost 6-0 and 6-2; the team of Stegient/Herd lost 6-2 and 6-2.

The Sulphur Springs mixed doubles team of Cantu/Kirkpatrick won 6-0 and 6-1.

"Jacksonville is tough, and they would easily win and be through quickly. It did not happen like that. We played hard, but Jacksonville kids just hit some incredible shots," Martinez said.
