Wildcats improve to 5-2 in district play

Johnson leads with 22 points

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hosted Marshall Tuesday for their seventh district game of the season. The two teams faced each other earlier this season, when the Wildcats picked up a 20-point win on the road.

Senior Lamodrick Johnson got things started, forcing a steal which he turned into a layup for the first points. Johnson turned around and knocked down a 3-pointer on the next possession to score the first five points of the night for Sulphur Springs. Johnson had another layup later in the frame, giving him seven points in the first few minutes.

With time winding down in the opening quarter, junior Justin Haire pump faked past a defender, creating enough room for him to get a jump shot off, draining the shot as time expired to put the Wildcats ahead 13-12 entering the second quarter.

Sulphur Springs was able to create a bit of separation in the second quarter, as they only allowed Marshall to score six points the frame. Senior Boo Wilkerson hit the final shot of the half, knocking down a corner 3-pointer to put his team ahead 26-18.

Sophomore Kordrick Turner opened the second half, scoring on a hook shot in the paint to put the Wildcats up by double-digits. The two teams traded baskets back and forth for a remainder of the third quarter, and Sulphur Springs had a 38- 27 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Wilkerson provided a huge spark to get the fourth quarter started, scoring five quick points and forcing Marshall to use a timeout. After the timeout Wilkerson didn’t stop there, as he picked up an assist on a Haire basket in the paint, putting the Wildcats ahead 45-28. Sulphur Springs was able to take their foot off the gas a bit in the final minutes, cruising to a 56-40 win.

Johnson was the leading scorer for the Wildcats, finishing with an impressive 22-point outing. Thirteen of his 22 points came int he second half. The next leading scorer was Wilkerson, who had a total of 10 points, seven of which came in the final frame.

Other scorers for Sulphur Springs were Turner with nine points, Haire with six points, Parker Whisenhunt who had five points and Jackson Darrow who had four points.

The Wildcats will be back home Tuesday to host Hallsville at 8 p.m. Sulphur Springs walked away with a 51-35 win the first time the two teams faced each other.
