Sulphur Springs | Boys Basketball

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hosted Mount Pleasant Tuesday night in a game they won 72-51.

Sulphur Springs started the game strong, scoring the first 8 points of the night. Mount Pleasant wasn’t able to find much offense in the first quarter, and the Wildcats led 14-6 after the first frame.

After Mount Pleasant opened the second quarter with 5 unanswered points, coach Clark Cipoletta called a timeout, and Sulphur Springs answered with an 11-3 run giving them a 25-14 lead.

Leading 32-20 the Wildcats held the ball for the final possession of the half and were able to get a layup from Lamodrick Johnson to make the score 34-20 at the half.

Sulphur Springs took advantage of Mount Pleasant’s very aggressive style of defense in the first half, drawing over 10 fouls. Sulphur Springs went 5-10 from the free throw line in the first half.

Picking up right where they left off in the first half, the Wildcats opened the third quarter with a Grayson McClure 3-pointer and a big dunk from Sadaidriene Hall, forcing Mount Pleasant to call a timeout to try to recoup.

Sulphur Springs would extend their lead to 51-27 with 2:02 remaining in the quarter, before Mount Pleasant went on a 10-4 run to finish the frame.

Mount Pleasant continued their aggressive defense and the Wildcats continued to capitalize in the fourth quarter, leading to more fouls and easy opportunities. Sulphur Springs outscored Mount Pleasant 17-14 in the fourth quarter to secure their 72-51 win.

Lamodrick Johnson led the way for the Wildcats, scoring 26 points on 12 shots from the field and a pair of free throws. Justin Haire and Grayson McClure each finished with 11 points, as Haire threw down a pair of big dunks, and McClure knocked down a couple of 3-pointers. Other scorers for the Wildcats were Sadaidriene Hall with 10, Cameron Kahn 10, Boo Wilkerson 2 and Justin Brock 2.

This was a big bounce back win for Sulphur Springs after falling to Greenville 41-38 Friday night. Look for Friday nights game against Texas High in Tuesday’s paper. Sulphur Springs will play again Tuesday Jan. 28 in Royse City, the freshman team will start at 5 p.m. with the JV and Varsity to follow.
