The Sulphur Springs Wildcats hosted Mount Pleasant for a three quarter scrimmage Thursday night that ended in a 14-14 tie.

The Wildcats got the ball to start the game and were able to drive 75 yards for a quick touchdown. A pass from senior quarterback Kaden Wallace to C.J. Williams got the Wildcats down to the 2-yard line, where running back Caden Davis was able to finish the drive. The extra point from Josh Tavera was good, giving the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 6:16 remaining in the first quarter.

Mount Pleasant answered back quickly, going 75 yards themselves, scoring on a 43-yard run. The Tigers’ extra point was good, to tie things up at 7-7 with 2:28 left in the first quarter.

The Wildcats’ second drive was just as impressive as their first, converting on a pair of third and longs to advance the ball into their own territory. Sulphur Springs was able to get into the end zone for a second time when Wallace threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Sherman. Sherman made a great one-handed catch on the play to give the Wildcats their lead back. The extra point from Uriel Santacruz was as good, and the Wildcats led 14-7 with 9:03 left in the second quarter.

The defense from both teams stood out in the remainder of the second quarter, with neither team allowing the other into opposing territory. Sulphur Springs got the ball one final time with 1:31 left in the half, but the drive was ended prematurely when Wallace threw an interception with 44 seconds left to play. The second quarter ended shortly after with the Wildcats still leading, 14-7.

The Mount Pleasant Tigers got the ball to start the third and final quarter and needed just a handful of plays to march down the field and tie the game up at 14-14.

Sulphur Springs answered back by driving down to the Mount Pleasant 38-yard line but turned the ball over on downs when they went for it on a fourth and long.

In the final minutes of the game, Wildcats safety Wiley Bennett made an interception to give the Wildcats one final chance, but time expired before Sulphur Springs could do anything. The scrimmage ended in a 14-14 tie.

“The kids had fun and showed great effort,” Coach Greg Owens said. “Both sides of the ball had some really good moments, but we have a lot to work on.”

Looking forward to their first regular season action, Owens said, “I’m excited and encouraged about this team and looking forward to starting the season at Frisco Wakeland next week.”.

Their regular season opener at Frisco Wakeland will start at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
