Wildcats down Paris 67-61 in tight game

Sulphur Springs | Boys’ Basketball

Sulphur Springs grabbed their first lead in the third quarter and fought until the end to secure a 67-61 win over a tough, ranked 4A Paris team at home in Tuesday night action.

No. 17 Paris jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, and the Wildcats narrowed the lead by the quarter’s end to 16-12.

Early in the second quarter, Sulphur Springs managed to tie the game 16-16, and Paris pulled away later with an 8-0 run to make the score 30-22. However, strong shooting and defense from Sulphur Springs held Paris to 4 points and scored 9 to make the score 34-31 at halftime.

The Wildcats never fell behind more than 7 points in the third quarter before they snagged a narrow 49-48 lead with less than a minute left in the third quarter. Paris tied the game 51-51 with a quick shot and a free throw at the very end of the quarter.

To start the fourth quarter, Paris retook the lead 53-51, but the Wildcats quickly tied and overtook their opponent with three successful shots from the 3-point line. Paris closed the gap slightly 64-61 and made strong efforts to tie the game, but fouls sealed the game for Sulphur Springs.

The 5A No. 5 Wildcats move to 4-1 for the season and travel to Mansfield to face A&M Consolidated in the Spring Creek Tournament today.
