The Cumby Trojans weren’t able to make it very far into their season before the suspension of all UIL activities but were able to get off to a hot start with the games they did play.

Cumby’s first game of the season came Feb. 28 when they blew out Celeste, 16-0. The Trojans got out to an early lead and were able to put the game away with a huge nine-run fifth inning. Justin Demidio had a huge day at the plate, going four for four with a double and a pair of RBI. Logan Krodle got the win for Cumby, shutting Celeste out in his four innings of work, allowing just two hits while striking out eight batters. Krodle also had a pair of doubles in the win and drove in three runs.

The Trojans next game came March 3 against Yantis. Jackson Evans got things going by retiring the side in order in the top of the first inning and his offense answered back, tallying 17 runs in the bottom of the frame. Evans didn’t allow a single hit in his four innings of work and struck out nine. He also had a strong day at the plate, hitting a pair of doubles. Demidio had another strong performance as well, going five for five in the game, driving in three runs and scoring four times.

Cumby’s most recent win came against Cross Roads on March 6. Cumby scored eight runs in the first two innings, allowing Krodle to work with a lead for the entire game. Krodle got the win, allowing just one run on two hits, while racking up seven strikeouts. Evans had the hot bat, finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Evans drove in five runs, going four for four with a pair of singles, a double and a triple. Demidio had a pair of doubles as well.

The Trojans lost their first game March 10 to Maud, 10-2. Despite only having six hits as a team, Demidio and Evans each had multi-hit games.

The UIL Thursday extended its suspension of all contests to May 4. Any new information on the situation will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.
