Saltillo moves up one

The Jan. 27 update to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches rankings were released Monday. All three local schools that have been in the rankings remain in the top 25 this week.

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats, who have had a very strong campaign this season, stayed at the No. 9 spot for Class 5A. In the past week they got a pair of wins, beating Mount Pleasant at home, 72-54, on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and defeating Texas High, 64-55, Friday, Jan. 24. The day after the rankings were released, they beat Royse City on the road, 69-43.

The Saltillo Lions, who came in at No. 19 in last weeks rankings, have climbed one spot, currently sitting at No. 18. So far, the Lions are undefeated in district play. They have beaten Avinger, 72-37, Bloomburg, 75-34, Sulphur Bluff, 54-35, Avery, 56-40, and on Tuesday, they beat Union Hill, 66-39. Saltillo is currently 24-4 on the season.

The Saltillo Lady Lions, much like the Sulphur Springs Wildcats, stay put where they were in last week’s rankings. After climbing to No. 13, the Lady Lions stayed put this week, despite beating Sulphur Bluff, 83-26, and taking down Avery, 56-25, last week. The Lady Lions improved to 7-0 in district on Tuesday night with a 84-6 win over Union Hill. Their record is currently 25-7 this season.
