An era has ended in Sulphur Springs, as athletic director and head football coach Greg Owens announced to his players Friday that he would be retiring after Christmas.

Owens, hired in 2006, spent 16 seasons as the head coach of the Sulphur Springs Wildcats football team. After a 2-8 season during his first season, Owens coached the Wildcats to seven consecutive winning seasons, which included three district championships in 2007, 2011, and 2012, and most notably a state championship in 2008 over the Dayton Broncos.

The Wildcats made another state appearance in 2009, reaching the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. In total, the Wildcats won 12 playoff games over that span.

However, the Wildcats have struggled in recent seasons, having last won a playoff game in 2013 and only having one winning season since then, coming in 2018.

Overall, the Wildcats made the playoffs in 11 of Owens’ 16 seasons. His total record in the regular season was 79-79 (.500), and his playoff record was 12-10 (.545), giving him an overall record of 91-89 (.505).

Owens coached numerous players that went on to play college football and some even went on to play in the NFL.

Sulphur Springs ISD will now commence to find the next head coach who will lead a new era of Wildcat football.
