In honor of celebrating 100 years of UIL Texas high school football, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has been honoring the best players the sport has seen. Each week, they have announced 10 honorees and have allowed fans the ability to vote on who they think is most deserving. At the end of the season, the nominee who is chosen by the fans each week will be honored at the state championship games at AT&T Stadium.

This week featured some very big names, including Sulphur Springs alum Forrest Gregg. Gregg, who is both a member of the College Football and Pro Football Hall of Fame, is famously known for being the “best player I ever coached,” according to legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi.

Gregg went on to play his college days at Southern Methodist University in Dallas before being taken in the second round of the 1952 NFL draft by the Packers.

After his legendary playing career, Gregg turned to coaching, where he most notably took the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl in 1981.

Also featured in this weeks list is future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees. Brees, from Austin Westlake, has built an amazing career for himself, becoming statistically the greatest quarterback of all time.

Other nominees this week are Groveton running back Rodney Thomas, Sugar Land running back Ken Hall, Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert, Throckmorton defensive lineman Bob Lilly, Southlake Carroll defensive back Dane Johnson, Austin Anderson linebacker Dick Lane, Longview offensive lineman Trent Williams and Lewisville defensive back Shannon Brazzell.

Fan voting can be done via their website, texasfootball.com, voting was still going as of press time Friday.
