Girls win 63-38, Boys win 79-23

SULPHUR BLUFF- The Sulphur Bluff Bears and Lady Bears basketball teams hosted Bloomburg Friday for a pair of district matches. Sulphur Bluff was also celebrating their homecoming.

Jada Wade got things started for the Lady Bears, scoring the first basket of the night. She followed it up with another bucket and a pair of free throws as Sulphur Bluff got out to an 11-3 lead in the first quarter.

Skylar Stanley led the way in the second frame, starting things off with three consecutive free throws. Stanley added one more free throw and a pair of made shots in the frame, giving the Lady Bears a 33-11 lead at the end of the first half.

Wade once again paced the way for Sulphur Bluff to open the second half, adding another five points of her own. Wade made three free throws and one basket in the frame, but the Lady Bears were outscored for the first time all game, with the frame ending 43-23.

With a 20-point lead entering the final frame, the Lady Bears never took their foot off the gas, outscoring Bloomburg 17-15 in the frame to give them the 63-38 win.

The boys game started much as the girls did, with the Bears taking a quick lead thanks to a basket from Brandon Branom. With the score 4-2, Montana Hurley followed with a 3-pointer to go ahead 7-2. The Bears finished the frame on a 5-2 run, leading 12-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Sulphur Bluff turned their offense up another notch in the second frame, with Hurley making eight points in the quarter alone. The Bears outscored Bloomburg 27-4 in the quarter, leading 39-8 at halftime.

Hurley and Branom kept the offense going in the second half, each scoring early in the frame to spark the offense. They each scored one more time in the period, giving the Bears a 65-18 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Dewitt Brookins led the team in the fourth quarter, scoring seven of the 14 Sulphur Bluff points. Bloomburg managed to score just five points in the frame, and the Bears walked away with an easy 79-23 win.

The wins help improve Sulphur Bluff ’s chances in the district races. The Lady Bears are now 7-6 with a 4-3 district record. For the boys team they are now 12-8 and 4-1 in district play. Sulphur Bluff is back in action Friday with a home game against Yantis. The varsity girls are set to begin at 6 p.m. with the varsity boys to follow.
