Sub-varsity teams lose final road tilts

Sulphur Springs sub-varsity football teams all closed out play this week. In Thursday action at Forney, the junior varsity and ninth grade both fell in defeat. The Sulphur Springs freshmen came up on the short end of a 31-23 score. Wildcat coach Jason Meskimen listed offensive standouts as Matt Mitchell, Landon Fields and Cole Haney. The defense was paced by Riley Hammons, Luke Caton and My'kaylan Rush. The freshmen finished the year with a 4-6 overall record, 3-5 in district. North Forney took a 27-7 win over the Sulphur Springs junior varsity. "We had some opportunities early to take the lead and fell short. The kids fought hard and never quit. I am proud of this team," said Mike Meador, Wildcat coach. Matt Sherman completed 3-of-5 passes for 25 yards, and Ty Stroud threw 12 passes, completing six for 24 yards. Colby Albritton caught three passes for 24 yards, and Alex Flecker made two receptions for 12 yards. Tanner Crawford rushed five times for 36 yards, and Justin Richards had four carries for 21 yards.

SSMS FOOTBALL

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats lost twice in Tuesday action at Mount Pleasant to conclude the eighth grade schedule. The B team game was won by Mount Pleasant, 22-12. The Wildcats scored on the ground and through the air. Juan Garcia caught four passes, including a touchdown reception. Caleb Williams rushed six times for 60 yards and one score. The A team lost a high scoring game, 44-36. The crowd was thrilled by the see-saw affair, but the Wildcats came up short. Quarterback Brady Driver had six carries for 50 yards, Malachi Roland picked up 80 yards on five rushing attempts with one score, and D.J. Wilkerson caught four passes for 70 total yards and one score. "Overall, both Wildcat teams played hard all night and fought to the end of the game. It was a great season for our middle school football program. As the season progressed, both teams got better," said Coach Eddie Flores. The eighth grade A team was 3-6 this season, and B team finished with a record of 0-7-2. The coach was also impressed with the young players’ development in the seventh grade program. "We are really proud of the seventh grade teams. They learned fundamentals and had a successful year. It was a good job by those boys," Flores said.
