SS team drops district match at home against Lindale

The Sulphur Springs Wildcats came up on the short end of a 12-7 score in varsity district tennis played Tuesday at the Sulphur Springs High School complex.

Sulphur Springs did well in boys doubles, taking two of three matches. Aaron Lucas teamed with Logan Schumacher to win by scores of 6-2 and 6-3; Jonah Kirkpatrick and Carlos Lopez won a three-set battle, 6-4, 4-6 and 10-3; the duo of Waylon Matlock and Alex Ramiro fell by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.

The Sulphur Springs girls doubles teams were swept by Lindale. Katherine Herd/Savannah Lilley lost 6-1 and 6-0, the duo of Paige Miesse and Trynity Luckett fell by 6-1 and 6-3 scores, and Haleigh Stegient and Kaylee Schumacher went down by scores of 6-3 and 6-1.

In mixed doubles, the team of Emily Dick and Jordan Gonzales lost 6-0 and 6-1.

Sulphur Springs won four of six boys singles matches. Lucas won 6-0, 6-2; Schumacher took a three-set victory 6-0, 6-7 and 7-5; Lopez won 6-1 and 6-1; and Gonzales was victorious, 6-2 and 7-6. Taking losses were Kirkpatrick by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 and Matlock losing, 6-3, 1-6 and 10-6.

The lone win in girls singles for the Lady Cats was Miesse with a 7-5, 6-4 win. Losing matches were Herd, 6-0 and 6-0; Stegient, 6-3, 6-0; Dick, 6-0, 6-3; Lilley, 6-1, 6-2; and Luckett, 6-4 and 6-3.

“I was pleased with our performance. We were very competitive with Lindale, one of the top teams in our district,” said Tony Martinez, Wildcats tennis coach.

The SSHS netters play Tuesday at Greenville at 4 p.m. in a district match.
