The Sulphur Springs tennis team scored a key district win Tuesday, taking a 15-4 decision at Greenville.

Sulphur Springs won five of six matches in boys singles. Jonah Kirkpatrick defeated Jacob Sanders, 6-1 and 6-2; Aaron Lucas blanked Matthew Yosten, 6-0 and 6-0; Logan Schumacher took a win over Luke Weise, 6-0 in the first set before Weise stopped play; Carlos Lopez won by overwhelming 6-0 and 6-0 scores against David McCarthy; Jordan Gonzales shut out Chris Wilton, 6-0 and 6-0; and taking a defeated was Waylon Matlock, who fell 6-4 and 6-2 against Darrick Theissen of Greenville.

In boys doubles, Schumacher/Lucas teamed won an 8-2 pro set of Jacob/Darrick, and the duo of Lopez/Alex Ramiro won 8-1 over McCarthy/Walton. The losing was that of Gonzales and Matlock to Wiese and Yosten, 9-8 and 7-4.

Sulphur Springs dominated girls singles play with five wins. Jeauxleigh Cantu won 8-3 over Ashley McCarthy; Haleigh Stegient edged by Kaylee Shields, 9-7; Paige Miesse took an 8-2 victory of Riya Bhusal; Savannah Lilley defeated Carati Bhusal 8-5; and Trinity Luckett downed Imani Tedriga, 8-4. Taking a loss was Emily Dick who fell 8-5 to Jasmine Berlotte.

In doubles play, Luckett/Miesse won 8-4, and the duo of Dick/Stegient won, 9-7. Taking a loss was the team of Katherine Herd/Lilley, 8-2. The pair of Cantu/Kirkpatrick won mixed competition, 8-0.

“We played hard against Greenville and were very aggressive. All in all, I’m very happy with our results. We still have some areas to improve on,” said Tony Martinez, head tennis coach.

The Wildcats play Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Texarkana against Texas High in their next district meeting at Texas High complex..
