SSMS volleyball girls post wins

The Sulphur Springs Middle School girls won Sept. 19 action against Marshall in volleyball competition.

The B team won 25-23 and 25-18. Megan Blakes, Taylor Frazier and Journi Piece each had five aces.

The Sulphur Springs A squad took a win by scores of 25-20 and 25-22. Kens-lei Smallwood had seven kills, Jacie Haire added five aces, and Alexis Tanton added four assists.

The teams plays Thursday, against Pine Tree. First game is at 4:30 p.m.

Wildcats post 2 tennis victories

The Sulphur Springs varsity tennis team won recently over Van and Mount Pleasant.

Playing at Van on Sept. 21, the Wildcats took an 11-8 victory downing the Vandals for the first time in years. The Wildcats won four of seven doubles matches and took four out of six singles sets. Sulphur Springs split six girls singles competition.

Boys singles wins were recorded by Jonah Kirkpatrick, Aaron Lucas, Carlos Lopez and Jordan Gonzales. Taking defeats were Waylon Matlock and Tate Smith.

In boys’ doubles the teams of Lucas/ Lopez won by a 9-8 tiebreaker, Gonzales/ Matlock was victorious by an 8-0 score, and Smith and Ramirez lost a tiebreaker, 7-4. In mixed doubles, the team of Kirkpatrick and Jeauxleigh Cantu took an 8-1 win.

In girls doubles, Paige Miesse teamed with Trynity Luckett for a win as did Ella Ray and Mykylie Meador. The duo of Harleigh Stegient and Kaylee Schumacher lost.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 forfeit win over Mount Pleasant when the Tigers did not show for the match.

Sulphur Springs is 6-11 overall for the season. The Wildcats are 2-2 in district and will host Royse City Sept. 30 at the SSHS Tennis Complex.

The Bulldogs were not expected to have a team this year, but joined in for district play.

Sulphur Springs has already clinched a first round playoff match which will be held on October 15 according to coach Tony Martinez.

“The win over Van was a team effort, up and down the lineup. We hadn’t beaten them in a while. The matach was not decided until late,” Martinez said.

Sulphur Bluff notches big win

The Lady Bears posted a win in tough district volleyball action.

Sulphur Bluff won 25-12, 25-8 and 25-19 over 2A power Clarksville.

Collett served for 14 points and recorded 22 assists with one kill.

Sulphur Bluff is currently in second place in the district race, tied with James Bowie.

The Lady Bears had a bye Tuesday. They will play Friday at James Bowie in another key district contest.

Cumby wins volleyball match

The Cumby Lady Trojans tooka recent win in volleyball action.

In Friday, Sept. 20 action the Lady Trojans won over PTAA (Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy) by scores of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-4.

As a team, Cumby had 35 aces. Top servers were Savannah Kurn with 12, Morgan added 10, and Krotky was a perfect 4-for-4 at the service line.

North Hopkins takes 2 victories

North Hopkins won over Fruitvale and PTAA in girls volleyball. In action Tuesday, Sept. 17 North Hopkins won 25-4, 25-22 and 25-5 over Fruitvale in district play.

The junior varsity won 25-11, 16-25 and 25-22. Marianna Aguilar had 14 points.

The Lady Panthers rolled to a 3-0 win over PTAA, 25-3, 25-7 and 25-4 in Tuesday, Sept. 24 home competition.

Standouts were Raylee Mathis with 13 kills, Madison Joslin served for 19 points and added 12 aces, and Kortni Ferrell served for 16 points with six aces. Ashley Aguilar served for 10 points and Jessica Garcia had eight points.

The North Hopkins team is 3-1 in district. No JV game was played.
