ECTOR — The Saltillo Lions had a great weekend, going 4-0 and taking home the gold in the Ector tournament.

The Lions opened the tournament hot, beating the Ector JV team 73-39. Andrew Redburn had an impressive 40-point game. Chris Boekhorst finished with 16, Dillon Beadle 7, Gunner Tarver 6, Coy Collins 2 and Colby McCoy 1.

Game two didn’t provide any tougher of a matchup for Saltillo, as they won that one just as easily, taking down Sam Rayburn 72-29. Chris Boekhorst led the way, ending with 33 points. Gunner Tarver and Andrew Redburn finishing with 15 and 13, respectively, Dillon Beadle had 6 and Coy Collins 4.

Game three is when Saltillo had its first real test against McKinney Christian. After a close first quarter, the Lions led 17-14, but the second quarter is when they were able to separate themselves, taking a 32-19 lead into the half.

McKinney Christian did their best to battle back in the second half, but the Lions were able to fight them off, winning 46-41.

Boekhorst led the team again with 15 points; Tarver had 10; Redburn, Collins and Beadle each had 7; and McCoy had 1.

This was the Lions most aggressive effort, as they shot a combined 25 free throws.

In the championship game, Saltillo took on the host of the tournament, Ector.

The Lions started the game strong, leading 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. Saltillo struggled to find offense in the second and third quarters, however, and trailed 34-29.

The Lions had their best quarter of the tournament in the fourth, outscoring Ector 21-10 to win the game 50-44.

Chris Boekhorst finished with a much needed 33 points, Gunner Tarver had 8, Coy Collins 7 and Dillon Beadle 2.

Multiple Lions were rewarded for their strong efforts in the tournament with superlatives. Boekhorst was named the Tournament MVP, and both Red-burn and Tarver were named to the All-Tournament team.

Saltillo’s next game will be Friday Jan. 3 at home against Wolfe City. JV starts at 5:30 with varsity to follow.
