A team improves to 6-3

FRUITVALE- The Saltillo Lions junior high basketball team traveled to Frutivale Thursday for a pair of games.

The Saltillo A team, who entered the day with a 5-3 record, got off to a very fast start, leading 17-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Lions had an even better second quarter, outscoring Fruitvale by 12 points in the frame to build their lead to 38-15.

Saltillo carried their momentum over into the second half, where they had a 15-4 third quarter, on their way to a 66-35 win.

Heston Gilbreath and Ethan Reese were the leading scorers in the game, posting 23 points and 19 points respectively. Tristian Rains and Rowdy Speir were next with eight points each, while Trey Tully finished with four points and Jonas Beadle had two points.

The Saltillo B team had a very strong showing as well, started the day with a 9-0 opening quarter. In the second quarter the Lions kept their foot on the gas, allowing just two points while they added another 12 points of their own. Saltillo allowed Fruitvale to score just two more points in the second half, as they went on to win the game by a final score of 32-4.

The Lions B team did a good job of getting everybody involved, as Hunter Burkett and Ethan Sexton led the way with seven points each. Just behind them was Dakota Womack with six points. Other scorers for the Saltillo B team were Tobin Potter and Shawn Dennis with four points each and Brandon Metcalf and Grayson Hurley who each had two points.

The wins make the Saltillo A team 6-3, and the B team 6-2 on the season. They play again Thursday in Sulphur Buff with the B team beginning at 4 p.m. and the A team to follow.
