The UIL Lone Star Cup standings are meant to measure a school’s performance in sanctioned athletic, academic and music championships.

This year, two Hopkins County schools can count themselves among the highest measures in their classification.

Both Miller Grove and Saltillo were included in the top-25 of the 1A Lone Star Cup standings, announced Monday afternoon.

Each school earns points based on their finishes in state competitions, with state championships counting for the largest amount of a team’s total.

Miller Grove finished tied for 16th in the 1A standings with Happy and fellow East Texas school Chireno with 34 points. Saltillo finished tied for 24th with Blum and Follett with 28 points.

Other East Texas schools in the 1A standings were Neches (tied for 7th), Oakwood (tied for 13th) and LaPoynor (tied for 19th).

Nazareth won the 1A Lone Star Cup for the third year in a row after winning a state title in girls basketball, making the state semifinals in boys basketball and finishing third as a team in girls cross country. The Swifts finished with 62 points.

In 6A, Southlake Carroll won its seventh Lone Star Cup, tied for third-most in the state. The Dragons won four state titles: boys and girls swimming and diving, girls soccer and baseball.

Class 5A’s winner was Highland Park thanks to state titles in football, girls soccer, boys golf and team tennis. The Scots have won 11 Lone Star Cups, more than any school in the state.

In Class 4A, Argyle won its 10th Lone Star Cup, second most all-time. The Eagles won state in UIL academics, girls basketball and baseball and finished as state runners-up in marching band and boys golf.

Brock won the cup in Class 3A for the second year in a row and sixth win all-time off the strength of a runner-up finish in boys basketball and a state semifinal trip in softball.

Mason won Class 2A’s Lone Star Cup after a state title in football, a semifinal run in girls’ basketball and winning the most matches in team tennis.

A total of 21 East Texas schools finished in the top-25 in their respective classes. Joining the previously named schools were Hallsville, Pleasant Grove, North Lamar, Spring Hill, Carthage, Malakoff, Atlanta, Mineola, Edgewood, Mount Vernon, Harmony, Martins Mill, Grapeland, Shelbyville and Lovelady.
