Bybee, Gonzalez claim individual Silver
The track and field season came to a close with the State track meet, held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas May 12 to 14. Hopkins County was represented by seven athletes across multiple events.
In her final high school track meet, senior Claire Bybee from Sulphur Springs claimed the silver medal in the 5A pole vault with a height of 12 feet, nine inches. Bybee will be continuing her pole vault career at Kansas State University after graduation.
Christian Gonzalez of Sulphur Bluff also earned a silver medal by placing second in the 800-meter run with a time of one minute, 58 seconds. Gonzales also competed in the 400-meter dash, placing sixth with a time of 52.25 seconds, and ninth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of four minutes, 59 seconds.
Coy Collins of Saltillo also competed in the 800-meter run, earning seventh place with a time of two minutes, five seconds.
Skylar Stanley of Sulphur Bluff competed in the 200-meter dash, placing eighth with a time of 27.12 seconds.
Bailey Neal of Sulphur Bluff competed in both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, earning eighth in the former with a time of five minutes, 51.82 seconds, and fourth in the latter with a time of 12 minutes, 24 seconds. Neal will be continuing her track career at Texas A&M University-Commerce upon graduation.
Ryker Haivala of Miller Grove also earned a medal at the state meet, earning bronze in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 14 seconds. Haivala also placed fourth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of four minutes, 43.69 seconds.
Lance Davis of Miller Grove also competed in the 3,200 and 1,600-meter runs, placing fifth in the former with a time of 10 minutes, 24 seconds, and sixth in the latter with a time of four minutes, 46 seconds.
