SALTILLO- The Saltillo Lions hosted Avery Tuesday for one of their final games of the regular season. The Lions were looking to win their 10th consecutive game. Their last loss came on Jan. 2 to Hooks in their final non-district contest of the year.

Things got off to a slow start in Tuesday’s contest, as neither team was able to find much offense in the early going. The Lions held Avery to just seven points in the opening frame, building a seven-point lead headed into the second quarter.

Both teams turned things up a notch offensively starting in the second quarter, as the two teams scored a combined 42 points in the second frame. Avery had the upper hand, outscoring Saltillo 23-19, but the Lions still led at the half, 32-29.

The offense continued to pour in during the second half, with each quarter being more high scoring than the last. Saltillo controlled the way, adding another three points to their lead in the third quarter. The Lions did the same thing in the fourth quarter and walked away with the 83-74 win.

Andrew Redburn was the leading scorer for Saltillo, posting a season-high 39 points. The most points a Saltillo player had scored this season was Chris Boekhorst who had 34 points in their Nov. 17 win against Longview Christian. Redburn has had two other 30-point performances this season.

Boekorst and David Whitworth each finished in double-digits as well, posting 17 points and 13 points respectively. Other scorers for the Lions were Gunner Tarver with nine points, Colby McCoy with three points and Coy Colins with two points.

The win, Saltillo’s 10th consecutive, improves the Lions record to 16-7 on the season and makes them 10-0 in district play. The junior varsity had a great day as well, pulling out a very tight win. Taking just a one-point lead into the final frame, the Lions junior varsity squad held on, walking away with the 45-44 win.

Cristian Trejo led the way, finishing with 10 points. Behind him was Jacob Sexton with nine points, Ethan White and Caden McGill with six points, Josh Butler, Luke Ritter and Justice Burke who each had four points and Landon Gilbreath who had two points.

Saltillo has already earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs after winning their district. They currently are waiting to see how the playoff picture will shape out to see who their possible opponents will be. Updates on Saltillo’s playoff schedule will be published in upcoming editions of the News-Telegram.
