Lions tripped up by CHAAMP at home

Collins, Tarver score runs

SALTILLO — The Saltillo Lions suffered another loss Tuesday when they were taken down 12-2 by the Christian Homeschool Athletic Association of Mount Pleasant (CHAAMP) Hawks. The Hawks would score early and often and never looked back, handing the Lions a loss.

The Hawks came to the plate first, facing Trey Tully on the mound. After the first batter was hit by a pitch, a fly out followed. On the next at-bat, the Hawks hit an RBI double, giving them a 1-0 lead.

After an error and a pop out, a 2-RBI single raised the Hawks’ lead to 3-1. A ground out on the next at-bat ended the Hawks’ turn.

The Lions would go down in order during the bottom of the first inning, as Coy Collins struck out, Jacob Sexton grounded out, and Gunner Tarver was tagged out on a dropped third strike.

The second inning began with a strikeout. In that same sequence, Tully suffered an injury and was replaced on the mound by Sexton. After an error, a strikeout and a fielder’s choice out ended the Hawks’ turn.

The Lions began the bottom of the second inning with Tully striking out. This was followed by Colby McCoy and Tobin Potter being walked, and Jordan Metcalf striking out.

Though the inning continued when Landon Gilbreath was hit by a pitch, the Lions’ turn ended when Grayson Gurley struck out, ending the second inning.

The third inning started with a double. After an out on a dropped third strike, the Hawks scored on an error, raising their lead to 4-0. After a walk and a single, a runner was tagged out at third base.

Following a single, an 2-RBI single brought the score to 6-0. This was followed by an RBI single, making the score 7-0. In that sequence, a runner was tagged out at home plate, ending the Hawks’ run.

The Lions’ third inning started with Collins hitting a pop fly ball for an out. Though the Lions gained a base runner when Sexton walked, their turn ended when Tarver struck out and Tully grounded out.

The fourth inning began with an error. After a fielder’s choice out and a fly out, the Hawks would hit an RBI single, raising their lead to 8-0. A pop out followed after, ending their turn.

The bottom of the fourth inning began with McCoy striking out. This was followed by Potter reaching base on an error and Metcalf hitting a single. However, the Lions’ turn ended when Gilbreath grounded out and Gurley struck out.

The top of the fifth inning started off with the Hawks loading the bases on a single and a pair of walks. Though a fielder’s choice out followed, a run was also scored, making the score 9-0.

Following a strikeout on the next at-bat, a 2-RBI single followed, as the Hawks extended their lead to 11-0. Another RBI single would follow immediately after, raising the score to 12-0. The Hawks’ turn finally ended with a ground out on the following at-bat.

The bottom of the fifth inning began with Collins hitting a single. This was followed by Sexton hitting an RBI single, driving Collins home and putting the Lions on the board, 12-1. After Tarver grounded into a fielder’s choice, where Sexton was tagged out, Tully grounded out, but Tarver scored on a wild pitch, trimming the score to 12-2.

The game ended with McCoy striking out on the next at-bat, as the Hawks capped off a 12-2 victory.

As a team, the Lions batted just 3 for 19 (.158) from the plate. Collins, Sexton, and Metcalf all recorded one hit each. Collins and Tarver both scored one run each.

Tully took the loss on the mound. Across one inning, he gave up two hits, three runs, and one earned run. In his six relief innings, Sexton conceded nine hits, nine runs, eight earned runs, and three walks, recording four strikeouts.

With the loss, the Lions dropped to 2-4 on the season. They resumed action the next day, playing the Lone Oak Buffaloes. Their next game is Monday, when they welcome the Fruitvale Bobcats to Saltillo High School.
