Lions stay undefeated in district play Tuesday

SALTILLO- The Saltillo Lions hosted Sulphur Bluff Tuesday for their first in a pair of district matches. Sulphur Bluff was the final district opponent that Saltillo hadn’t faced at least once yet.

The game got off to a fairly close start, with neither team able to gain a big advantage over the other. Saltillo was able to score an impressive 20 points in the opening frame, but Sulphur Bluff answered back with 14 points of their own, keeping it at a 6-point game.

The Lions started to create some separation in the second quarter, scoring a game-high 22 points in the frame. Sulphur Bluff was only able to match them with 12 points, and Saltillo took a 42-26 lead at the half.

In the second half Saltillo was able to run away with things, outscoring Sulphur Bluff 15-6 in the third quarter, on their way to a 69-45 win.

Chris Boekhorst and Andrew Redburn were the leading scorers for Saltillo, finishing with 25 points and 21 points respectively. Their combined 46 points paced the way for a 24-point win.

Gunner Tarver also finished in double-digits, adding 12 points of his own. David Whitworth finished with nine points and Coy Collins had two points.

This is the fifth consecutive win for the Lions, who are now 11-7 and 6-0 in district play.

The junior varsity teams also played, with Saltillo trailing by two points at the end of the first quarter. Sulphur Buff was able to create some separation in the second quarter, however, and cruised to a 51-40 win.

Caden McGill was the leading scorer for the Saltillo junior varsity squad, posting 12 points in the loss. Ethan White was right behind him with nine points, while Josh Butler and Luke Ritter had five points, Cristian Trejo had four points, Jacob Sexton had three points and Justice Burke had two points.

Saltillo will have Tuesday off and returns to action with a home game against Christian Home Educators of Sulphur Springs Friday. The junior varsity girls are set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity girls and varsity boys teams to follow.
