Boekhorst drops 29 points

AVERY- The Saltillo Lions traveled to Avery Friday for their fifth district game of the season. So far the Lions have yet to lose a district game, winning their first four by double-digits.

The Lions were able to get out to a strong start, scoring 24 points in the first quarter. Avery wasn’t able to keep up offensively, managing to score just 12 points of their own.

The roles changed in the second quarter, with Avery leading the way, scoring 17 points in the frame. Saltillo was only able to match them with 13 points, but they still took a 37-29 lead at the half.

In the second half the Lions found their offense again, posting 23 points in the third frame, while only allowing Avery to score 14 points. Neither team had a great fourth quarter offensively, and the Lions went on to win the game by a final score of 72-51.

Chris Boekhorst was the leading scorer for Saltillo, posting 29 points. Andrew Redburn, Coy Collins and Gunner Tarver all finished in double-digits as well. Redburn had 12 points, and Collins and Tarver each had 11 points. David Whitworth had nine points.

The win makes Saltillo 10-7 on the season and keeps them undefeated in district play with a record of 5-0.

The junior varsity also played for Saltillo, in a game that started off very slow. Saltillo led just 6-4 at the end of the first quarter, before shutting Avery out in the second quarter to lead 15-4 at the half. The second half was very tightly contested, but the Saltillo junior varsity ultimately pulled it out by a final score of 25-12.

Ethan White and Caden McGill were the leading scorers, posting six points a piece. Luke Ritter and Justice Burke were next with four points, while Cristian Trejo had three points, and Landon Gilbreath had two points.

Saltillo returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 26 with a home game against Christian Home Educators of Sulphur Springs. The junior varsity girls are set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity girls and varsity boys teams to follow.
