SALTILLO- The No. 12 Saltillo Lions hosted Christian Home Educators of Sulphur Springs Tuesday for their final non-district game of the season. The Lions have played impressive basketball of late, as they entered the day riding a sixgame winning streak.

The Lions opened the game with one of the most explosive quarters they have had all season, posting 34 points in the opening frame. Their defense played just as well as their offense too, as they only allowed seven points in the first eight minutes of the game.

Saltillo continued their strong play in the second quarter, adding another 25 points to their total. CHESS had their highest scoring quarter of the night with 13 points, but the Lions still took a 59-20 lead at the half.

Saltillo had their lowest scoring quarter of the game in the third quarter, but they were still able to score 19 points and increase their lead by 12 points. In the fourth frame the Lions scored 22 more points, cruising to a 100-35 win.

Saltillo had three players finish with 20 points or better. Andrew Redburn was the leading man, finishing with 28 points. Right behind him were Chris Boekhorst and David Whitworth who had 26 points and 21 points respectively.

Other notables for Saltillo were Coy Collins with 12 points, Colton Mc- Gill with 10 points and Caden McGill who had three points. The win improves Saltillo’s record to 13-7 on the season.

The junior varsity got off to a slow start for Saltillo, trailing 19-16 at the end of the first half. They turned things up a notch in the second half, however, blowing CHESS out in the final two frames to win the game by a final score of 47-25.

Luke Ritter was the leading scorer with 16 points. Just behind him were Cristian Trejo and Jacob Sexton with nine points. Ethan White finished with six points, while Josh Butler had five points and Justice Burke had two points.

Saltillo has a pair of road games next week, as they travel to Avinger Tuesday and Union Hill Friday. In both games the junior varsity boys are set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity girls and varsity boys teams to follow.
