SALTILLO — The Saltillo Lions hosted Avery Tuesday night for their second district matchup this season. The Lions won the first matchup on Jan. 24 by a final score of 56-40.

Saltillo opened the game in a tight battle, leading by just 1 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, they were able to create a bit of separation, outscoring Avery, 14-9, in the frame to give them a 25-19 lead at the half.

Both teams’ offenses picked up in the second half, with both teams nearly doubling their total score in the third quarter. Saltillo was able to add to their lead again and entered the fourth quarter, up 46-34.

The Lions didn’t let off the gas in the fourth, scoring another 18 points in the frame, allowing Avery just 13, to give them the 64-47 win.

Gunner Tarver led the way for the Lions, finishing with 21 points. Chris Boekhorst wasn’t far behind him with 17. Andrew Redburn and Dillon Beadle also finished in double-digits, scoring 11 points and 10 points, respectively. The other scorer for the Lions was Coy Collins with 5.

This win makes Saltillo 28-4 on the season and 9-0 in district play. They will have their final regular season game Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Union Hill. The JV team starts at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
