Redburn, Boekhorst combine for 52

AVINGER- The Saltillo Lions traveled to Avinger Tuesday, looking to improve their district record to 7-0. The Lions won the previous match between these two teams back on Jan. 8 by a final score of 74-35.

The Lions opened the match with a huge first quarter, setting the tone immediately. Saltillo scored 20 points in the opening frame while holding Avinger to 10 points, building a double-digit lead early on.

In the second quarter the Lions continued their momentum, having their highest scoring quarter of the night with 24 points. Once again holding Avinger to 10 points in the frame, the Lions entered the locker room leading 44-20.

Saltillo opened the second half by continuing their strong play, once again scoring points at a high rate. The Lions put up 23 points in the frame and held Avinger to 11 points. In the fourth quarter Saltillo’s offense slowed down a bit, and their defense let up 16 points, but they still walked away with a 83-47 win.

Andrew Redburn was the leading scorer in the game, finishing with an impressive 30 points. Right behind him was Chris Boekhorst who finished with 22 points. The two combined for 52 points, five more than Avinger scored as a team.

Other scorers for the Lions were Coy Collins and David Whitworth who each had nine points, Gunner Tarver with five points, Colby McCoy with four points and Colton McGill who had two points.

The win improves Saltillo’s record to 14-7 and keeps them unbeaten in district play with a record of 7-0.

Saltillo’s junior varsity fell just short to Avinger, losing the game by a final score of 38-28. Jacob Sexton was the leading scorer with nine points. Josh Butler and Luke Ritter each had five points, while Caden McGill had four points, Landon Gilbreath had three points and Cristian Trejo had two points.

The Lions return home Tuesday to face Avery for their final home game of the season. The varsity boys are set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
