5 players finish in double-digits

SALTILLO - The Saltillo Lions hosted Union Hill Tuesday for their fourth district game of the season. In their other three district games the Lions have won by final scores of 59-8, 80-46 and 74-35.

Saltillo set the tone from the very beginning, coming out of the gate with a 24-point first quarter. The Lions turned around and added another 24 points in the second frame, leading 48-11 at the half.

Saltillo’s offense didn’t slow up any in the second half, adding another 20 points in the third quarter and 16 points in the fourth quarter to win the game by a final score of 84-27.

Chris Boekhorst and David Whitworth were the leading scorers for the Linos, finishing with 19 points each. Coy Collins, Andrew Redburn and Gunner Tarver all finished in double-digits as well, scoring 16 points, 12 points and 11 points respectively. Other scorers for the Lions were Colby McCoy with four points and Ridge Johnson with three points.

The win improves the Lions record to 9-7 and 4-0 in district play. After opening the season with a 2-5 record, Saltillo has bounced back, winning seven of their last nine games.

The Lions junior varsity team had a strong performance as well, getting out to a 16-2 lead in the first quarter. Saltillo added 16 more points, leading 32-8 at the end of the first half. Taking their foot off the gas a bit, the Lions allowed Union Hill to find some offense in the second half, but they still cruised to a 58-29 win.

Ethan White led the way for the Saltillo junior varsity, having an impressive 23-point outing. Cristian Trejo was the next leading scorer with 11 points. Landon Gilbreth and Caden McGill each had seven points, while Luke Ritter had five points, Jacob Sexton and Justice Burke each had two points, and Jordan Metcalf had one point.

The Lions will play again Tuesday when they host Sulphur Bluff for another district match. The junior varsity girls will begin at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity boys, varsity girls and varsity boys teams all to follow.
