Lions grab first win of the season

Boekhorst drops 34 points

LONGVIEW- The Saltillo Lions traveled to Longview Tuesday, to face Longview Christian for their second game of the season. The Lions lost in their opener, 75-59 to Martins Mill on Nov. 13.

Saltillo set the tone early, allowing just eight points in the opening frame, while managing to score 24 points of their own. Despite being outscored by one point in the second quarter, the Lions had a comfortable 43-28 lead at the half.

Saltillo picked up right where they left off, posting another 20-point frame in the third quarter, while holding Longview Christian to 15 points. The Lions went on to take the win by a final score of 77-57.

Leading the way for the Lions was last years district MVP, Chris Boekhorst. Boekhorst had an impressive 34-point performance in the teams first victory of the season.

Behind him were Gunner Tarver and Coy Collins, who had 11 points and 10 points respectively. Other scorers for the Lions were Colby McCoy and Andrew Redburn who each had eight points, David Whitworth with seven points, and Colton McGil who finished with two points.

The win makes Saltillo 1-1 to start the season. They will have some time off before resuming play on Saturday, Nov. 28. That game will be held at Rivercrest, where they junior varsity will begin at 2 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
