Lions dominate in home win Monday

Boekhorst outscores Savoy

SALTILLO- The Saltillo Lions hosted Savoy Monday for a non-district matchup. The Lions were just 3-6 entering the day.

Saltillo set the tone from the very beginning, outscoring Savoy 23-7 in the opening frame. Their defense played even better in the second frame, allowing Savoy to score just six points. The Lions added another 17 points of their own, and took a 40-13 lead into the half.

Things were just as easy for the Lions in the second half as they were in the first half, adding another 19 points to their score in the third quarter, while allowing Savoy to score just five points. In the final quarter Savoy had their first double-digit frame, but they were still outscored by 12 points, and Saltillo won the game by a final score of 81-28.

Chris Boekhorst was the leading scorer for the Lions, scoring 30 points in the game, two more points than Savoy scored as a team. Andrew Redburn also had a strong showing, posting 16 points of his own.

Colton McGill finished just shy of double-digits with an eight-point game. Behind him was Coy Collins with five points, and Gunner Tarver, Caden McGill, Ridge Johnson, Colby McCoy and David Whitworth who all had four points each. Christian Trejo had two points as well.

The win makes the Lions 4-6 this season and winners in two of their last three games.

The junior varsity also played, with the Lions also getting out to a strong start in that one. It was a tightly contested match, but Saltillo was able to lead 21-20 at the end of the first half. Things stayed just as close in the second half, but the Lions were able to walk away with the 39-35 win.

Ethan White was the leading scorer for the Saltillo junior varsity, posting an impressive 21-point performance. Landon Gilbreath, Luke Ritter and Justice Burke each had four points in the game while Christian Whitworth and Jacob Sexton both had three points.

The Lions will return to action Tuesday with a home game against North Hopkins. The junior varsity girl are set to begin at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity boys, varsity girls and varsity boys teams all to follow.
